The Hummer H3T is scheduled to be unveiled in the Chicago Auto Show next week. To stir it up a little before the official reveal, GM gave the test mules to HMR Magazine. The testers put the H3T through its paces and were pleased with the truck’s overall performance. This is what one of the excited testers had to say.
"Priced in the high thirties, I think the H3T will not only be a hit with recreational consumers, but everyone from Contractors to Search and Rescue crews will fall in love with this truck. I know HUMMER sees their main competition for the H3T being smaller pickups like the Tacoma or the Dakota. But anyone who’s seen the H3T will tell you that it’s "Like nothing else" and anyone who’s driven the H3T will tell you…there is no competition."
Tata Motors earned International attention when it unveiled its small car Nano, earlier this month in New Delhi. Tata Motors is credited for continuously creating new market segments in India and all its attempts have been fruitful so far.
The Tata Ace project was one such low-cost exercise by them to give the nation a tiny truck, a concept only a company like Tata Motors could come up with. It was a run away success and the truck sells like hot cakes for its incomparable strengths which are reliability, running costs and the immense loads that it can haul effortlessly.
The popular workhorse from India could well be on its way to serve people in the United States. According to Reuters, Tata has struck a deal with Chrysler LLC to make an electric version of the mini truck for the United States. Tata will work in partnership with Chrysler’s Global Electric Motorcars Division to develop this vehicle.
Reuters also quotes an unnamed Tata spokesman saying: "We are indeed exploring the feasibility of a vehicle on the Ace platform with an electric engine suitable for the U.S., in collaboration with a U.S. company. But it is premature at this stage to give any details."
In India, the Ace comes with a 700 cc indirect-injection diesel engine which gives out 16 horsepower and 38 Nm torque. The specifications of the vehicle can be seen here
General Motors will unveil at the Chicago Auto Show the Hummer H3T, a pick-up truck based on the popular H3, but features a five-passenger crew cab and a separate five-foot-long (1.5 meters) bed. It is the only midsize truck to come standard with full-time four-wheel drive, 32-inch tires and functional skid shields. It also is the only midsize truck to offer front and rear locking differentials, as well as 33-inch tires.
The H3T is offered in four trim levels, including five-cylinder models and the popular, V-8-powered H3T Alpha edition. Production is scheduled to begin in the third quarter of 2008.
The standard version is powered by a Vortec 3.7L I-5 with dual overhead cams and variable valve timing. This inline five-cylinder engine offers an excellent combination of power and efficiency, delivering 242 hp at 5600 rpm and 242 lb.-ft. of torque at 4600 rpm. The engine is mated with a a five-speed manual transmission or an available four-speed, electronically controlled automatic.
The H3T Alpha will be powered by 5.3 liter V8 engine that delivers 300 hp and a peak torque of 320 lbs-ft. An aluminum cylinder block is used with the H3 Alpha’s engine. It helps reduce overall mass and maintains a more desirable front-to-rear weight balance. The engine is mated with a Hydra-Matic 4L60 electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission.
