TVR making a comeback with new Corvette-engined model

Nikolai Smolenski didn’t have much luck when he took over TVR in 2004, but it seems this "baby oligarch" is planning a little bit of a comeback after he recovered ownership in 2007. TVR’s Russian owner announced that the company plans to build a new sports roadster that will use a Corvette engine; taking a little bit of an automaking shortcut.

“We looked at every engine available — including making our own — and decided that the Corvette was the most powerful off-the-shelf design going. Fitting it to our chassis allows us to meet all current regulations and is not too big a step.”

The new model will be built by Gullwing, which currently makes the AC MkVI, the successor to the AC Cobra. A prototype version will be unveiled at Goodwood’s Moving Motor Show in July.

Talking with AutoCar, Smolenski said that his new car will have a modified version of the traditional steel backbone chassis and all-independent suspension, same as all previous TVR models.

Also in TVR’s future plans there is a hybrid concept: "I always wanted an automatic model, but the chassis wouldn’t allow either a regular auto or an automated manual. The hybrid concept would allow us to kick out the conventional gearbox completely."

We’ll have to wait and see if TVR will be able to survive without its previous owner, Peter Wheeler and his Cerbera, Tuscan, Typhon, or Griffith. We’ll just call this round 2 of Smolenski’s attempt.

TVR rumored to debut new sports car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed

Despite not being a household name, TVR has – over the years – picked up quite a niche following and if there’s any truth to current rumors surrounding the Russian sports car maker, then TVR is finally set to make its debut on the world stage.

According to Pistonheads, TVR is getting ready to debut their new sports car with the Goodwood Festival of Speed being pegged as the event TVR is targeting for the launch of their brand new ride.

Details are still a little sketchy at this point, but we do know that the car is, for one, expected to be built in Germany. Two, it will bump out a price of around $120,000, making it a likely challenger to the more established Porsche 911s and Audi R8s, and three, the new TVR sportscar is likely to have either a Ford or GM-sourced engine, most likely a V8 ’crate engine’, with a total output of 500 hp. This decision has been made in order to save millions in development and homologation costs.

As soon as new developments arise, we’ll be sure to update all of you.

Dutch student designs TVR Artemis

In today’s world of digital technology, it seems that - now more than ever – there’s an increasing number of young designers that are slowly getting into digital car design.

With the advent of computer softwares that specialize on virtual design, young students like Niels van Roij have been given the opportunity to showcase their works beyond their own classrooms. As part of his final project at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Roij squeezed juices to come up wth a design proposal for a new TVR sports car.

Calling his creation the ‘TVR Artemis’ - if you know your mythology, Artemis is the goddess of hunt, childbirth, virginity and fertility - Roij created a sports car that comes with a clean and sleek design. Unlike other car designs that we’ve seen in the past that have the propensity to go over-the-top, Roij’s design doesn’t lend itself to exaggerated styling gimmicks and instead sticks to a clean and classy look that maintains the standard design of what a TVR sports car looks like.

We don’t know if TVR is willing to pick up Roij’s design for the Artemis, but if the struggling British sports car maker is looking to bring in fresh ideas to their fold, then taking Roij’s styling into consideration might not be that bad of an idea.
