The 2014 Nissan Xterra checks a lot of boxes on the "Needs" lists of buyers, but even with its relative versatility, customers are likely to veer towards other models. This is not for lack of quality, but rather because it looks So. Dang, Boring.

But even if aesthetics aren’t a particular strong suit for the Nissan , you should be happy to know that the Xterra is one of those SUV s that doesn’t really care about its looks. It’s all about its function and versatility and to be fair, it has both of those attributes in abundance.

That’s what you stand to receive with the 2014 Xterra. It may not have the prettiest face at the party, but it’s all sorts of smart and has the endurance and capacity to be by your side wherever you go. Whether its taking your kids to soccer games or heading out to the woods during a long weekend, Nissan’s resident off-road SUV can handle both tasks handily.

Chevy showed up a little late to the luxury truck party, as 2014 marks the 15th anniversary of the Ford F-Series King Ranch. At the same time, it’s the fourth year on the market for the Ram Laramie Longhorn. Well, this all came to an end in 2013, thanks to the new High Country trim level for the Silverado.

The range-topping High Country trim was introduced on the Silverado 1500 just last year, when the new-generation truck was launched. Now, the luxurious appearance package has been transferred over to the company’s heavy-duty lineup in hopes that pretentious truck customers will finally have a reason to stop by GM dealerships.

Needless to say, the 2015 Silverado HD is well prepared ahead of a new battle with Ford and Ram , but it remains to be seen if its strong enough to compete in the $50,000+ market. The new High Country mule won’t go on sale until summer kicks in, so we might as well have an in depth look at its features and numbers.

Introduced last summer, the 2014 Ram 1500 Black Express Edition was quite popular with pickup truck drivers according to the Chrysler -owned brand, who has just revealed that the appearance package will make its way onto the more capable Heavy Duty lineup.

As suggested by its name, the Black package wraps both the Ram 2500 HD and 3500 HD in an all-black exterior. In fact, we might as well call these trucks the triple-black Ram pickups, as the chrome is completely removed from both bumpers and the imposing cross-hair grille, which are now offered in the same color as the body.

To complete the menacing look, the manufacturer perched the trucks on black 20-inch aluminum wheels and removed body-side badging from all models save for the diesel, Cummins-powered ones. Naturally, the premium bi-functional halogen headlamps and the fog lamps come with blacked-out housings, the taillights feature a smokey finish, while the windows are tinted all around.

Also included with the Black package are 15-amber-LED turn signals, 3-amber-LED side markers, and Parkview and Parksense technologies.

The new appearance pack can be had with Crew Cab and Mega Cab Ram 2500 and 3500 SRW models in Big Horn and Laramie trims, in either two-wheel and four-wheel-drive configurations.

Pricing starts at $42,140 for the Ram Heavy Duty Black, plus a $1,195 destination fee.

India ’s Mahindra&Mahindra is a largely unknown company outside of its home country. But the brand has been making waves recently, having acquired some assets recently (South Korea’s SsangYong ) to go with its possible expansion into the EV world with the Halo Coupe EV Concept. But none of those things could potentially draw the world’s attention like building the Komodo IED Concept.

Actually, the Komodo IED Concept is nothing more than a design study created by Indian designer and IED Torino graduate, Makrand Patil.

Presenting the Komodo IED Concept as a versatile vehicle that can cater to a wide range of markets, Patil’s vision for the vehicle is to turn it into a functional and luxurious 4x4 that can go just about anywhere it pleases.

Whether the designer’s study does make it past this stage is another question entirely. But if Mahindra wanted to, it shouldn’t have any problem agreeing to this, right?

After all, there’s no surer way to get attention than building a vehicle that attracts it the moment it comes into the picture.

Essentially a simplified version of the 2014 Nissan Rogue , the 2014 Rogue Select is the kind of what-you-see-is-what-you-get compact SUV that leaves everything it’s got at the front door. It doesn’t come with a lot of major surprises, offering itself as is and little in the way of added surprises.

It figures that for a compact SUV that doesn’t have a whole lot of optional equipment, the Rogue Select is being offered for budget-conscious owners. For its price (less than $20,000 for the base model) you can make a case that the Rogue Select is a good way to go just so you can say you have a compact SUV in your garage.

But the other prevailing thought is the extra money you can shell out for other models that have a lot more to offer than the Rogue Select. Nissan probably doesn’t mind that thinking since it still has the 2014 Rogue to satisfy those needs.

It’s just that in case you’re on a tight budget, Nissan has you covered with the Rogue Select.

When it comes to the possibility of a BMW X7, we’ve heard all kinds of things. First, there were rumors saying it would be produced and then the rumors were pulled back saying that plans for the X7 had been canceled . Now, we finally have official confirmation of the range-topping X-Series model.

This announcement really came out of left field, and was buried deep in a press release regarding the company’s South Carolina plant. The reason it ended up in this release was because it will be the newest addition to the plant’s workflow in 2016. Despite being built here in the U.S., the X7 will be a part of Bimmer ’s global market, with a lot of the demand coming from the growing Chinese market.

For now, the details are scarce, but there are some assumptions to be made about what engines it will carry and the basic styling.

Updated 03/31/2014: BMW officially confirmed that the future X7 luxury SUV will be produced at the company’s Spartanburg plant stating 2016. "With the BMW X7, we are developing another, larger X model, which we will produce at our U.S. plant for our world markets – once again underscoring our commitment to the U.S."

The 2014 GMC Terrain is the perfect example of how a company can put a model in the best position to succeed by not deviating away from its true identity, even if it means not appeasing those who clamor for a new and futuristic design. The Terrain may be classified as a midsize SUV , but it still has the soul of a truck, which is why the muscular nature of its looks fits into its identity. The 3.6-liter V-6 that produces 301 horsepower and 272 pound-feet of torque also helps in that department.

It probably would’ve been a good idea to change the way the Terrain looks if it was struggling in sales, but the Terrain has been one of GMC’s more successful models, and there doesn’t appear to be much calling for any drastic changes to its appearance.

Why change a good thing, right? In the case of the Terrain, it definitely applies.

For 2014, Mitsubishi gave the Outlander a full overhaul, and you couldn’t ask for a more comprehensive overhaul. The Outlander has lost all that made it unique in the crossover SUV realm and inherited a rather boring look. In fact, it looks totally out of place in Mitsubishi’s lineup, to be perfectly honest. The Outlander wasn’t all bad though, as the tester that I received had a lot of options added, which made for a nice week driving it around.

Under the hood of my tester was the base 2.4-liter four-pot that only produced 166 ponies and 162 pounds of twist. Why Mitsubishi didn’t send it with the optional V-6 is beyond me. The 224 horsepower and 215 pound-feet would have likely made for more fun and a quieter ride. Not that the V-6 isn’t underpowered in its own right.

The Outlander is really a love it or hate is type of vehicle. Traditionalists likely enjoy its normal styling, but generation X and Y likely think it is too boring to compete. Can its features overcome the sharp looks of the Toyota RAV4 and the larger third row in the Kia Sorento ?

I recently spent a week behind the wheel of a 2013 Toyota 4Runner , and while it missed Toyota’s 2014 mild refresh , it still had the guts of a true off-roader and honest-to-goodness sports utility vehicle. My 4Runner was decked out with the Trail package that included part-time four-wheel-drive, a locking differential and Toyota ’s KDSS suspension system with Multi-Terrain Select. With all the right option boxes checked, this 4Runner was set to live up to its name.

It was 1984 when the 4Runner began making its name known to Americans as the SUV adaptation of Toyota’s popular pickup. In fact, the 4Runner was basically a Toyota pickup, or Hilux as its known outside the U.S., with a removable fiberglass camper shell over the bed and a removable rear seat installed inside. It competed directly against the Ford Bronco and Chevrolet Blazer and won a loyal following with its nimble size and bulletproof powertrain.

Over the years, the 4Runner has undergone many changes and became its own vehicle apart from the pickup. But that body-on-frame construction, four-wheel-drive, and nimbler size still lives on. Even in a time when the traditional SUV is becoming an endangered species, the 4Runner hasn’t lost its rugged appeal. The crossover crowd has the Highlander , and that’s just fine, as it leaves the 4Runner to cater to a more adventurous crowd who still use low range and the trailer hitch.

We’ve known this for quite some time now through rumors and industry rumblings, but it was never confirmed until now; Land Rover will create a new sub-brand called the "Discovery" and launch the new lineup to fill this sub-brand starting in 2015. To put this into perspective, this is precisely what the maker has done with its Range Rover lineup: Range Rover Evoque , Range Rover Sport and Range Rover .

We didn’t receive any real details on what’s in store for the new Discovery lineup, as Land Rover only confirmed its plans. Figuring out part of the plans, however, is not too hard. The Discovery lineup is going to be the more laid-back of the Land Rover lines, and will include the baby Land Rover that we’ve caught testing before — the likely replacement for the LR2 — a replacement for the larger LR4 , and finally an Evoque-sized or smaller compact crossover .

The new Discovery lineup will ride on the Range Rover’s aluminum chassis that is resized to fit each model.

So, this means that we will soon have the Range Rover luxury line and the Discovery leisure lineup, but that leaves a big gap in the utility segment. Don’t fret though, because we hear that Land Rover is planning to use the Defender name for the utility-style models in its revised lineup.

This not only simplifies the Land Rover lineup for buyers, as they can now pick a Land Rover that precisely suits their needs, but it also puts all of the other luxury SUV makers on notice that Land Rover has the guns locked and loaded, and it’s coming for blood this time...

My only fear is that Land Rover may dilute its brand a little too much by releasing too many models, but by breaking things up into smaller sub-brands, it may be able to avoid the confusion caused when automakers release too many of one type of vehicle.
