Land Rover Range Rover Sport

In 2013, Land Rover introduced a totally new generation of its flagship Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs. The brand is known to produce some of the finest premium off-road luxury vehicles in the world and it did not come as a surprise to us when the world bestowed it with praise, as has been the case with Land Rovers historically.

Yes, the Range Rover has grown into a mature off-road vehicle and is in league of its own, when it comes to luxury motoring. While, the Range Rover sits at the top of the food chain, its smaller sibling, the Range Rover Sport , has had its fair share of successes. MotorTrend magazine honored the RR Sport with the coveted ’SUV of the Year’ and now Four Wheeler Magazine has awarded the Range Rover Sport with "Four Wheeler of the Year" for 2013.

This is the third time a Land Rover SUV has won this award after intense and grueling testing both on tarmac and on rugged terrain designed to test the off-road capabilities of the vehicle.

"It is a great achievement for the very luxurious and performance oriented Range Rover Sport to be named ’Four Wheeler of the Year,’ by the country’s oldest four-wheel drive enthusiast publication," said Kim McCullough, Brand Vice President, Land Rover North America.

Big, bad and ready to rumble, this Land Rover Range Rover means all sorts of business. And then some.

In some respects, that’s what you expect from an aftermarket company like Arden, which has specialized in these types of programs for Range Rovers. It’s latest take is no different, and yet when you take into account the kind of performance upgrade it gave the SUV , you stand and wonder if it could’ve been more.

That’s the respect we have for Arden.

But hey, this tuning program is still a whale of an upgrade, something Arden achieved by giving the Range Rover a supercharger kit, a new sport catalytic converter, an optimized ECU unit and a high-performance exhaust system. Considering that the standard Range Rover’s 5.0-liter, V-8 engine can produce a tight 510 horses and 461 pound-feet of torque, it’s an impressive feat that Arden was able to spike the numbers to a staggering 650 horsepower and 580 pound-feet of torque. This is good enough to improve the SUV’s 0-to-60 mph time from 5.3 seconds to somewhere around 3.8 and before hitting a top speed of 161 mph.

No word yet on how much this program is going to cost, but with the promise of 650 horsepower to play around with, we’ve no doubt that it’s going to set customers back a few bucks.

The current-generation Mercedes M-Class (W166) was unveiled in 2011, as a 2012 model, and since then it hasn’t received any major updates. Things are about to change, however, as it looks like a revision for the ML is just around the corner, as our spy photographers managed to snap the first photos of the revised ML during winter testing.

As you can see from these spy shots, it looks like only the front and the rear sections will be updated. The interior will also receive a large iPad-like screen on the dashboard and the new COMAND infotainment controller with a touchpad on the center console.

We also expect to see a few changes under the hood, with a plug-in-hybrid version being a possibility.

The revised ML will be released in late 2014, as a 2015 model. It will join the MLC — the model that will take on the BMW X6 — in Mercedes’ crossover lineup.

Updated 12/23/2013: The upcoming Mercedes M-Class was caught testing again, this time on the public German roads.

The Land Rover Defender has lived a long and glorious life that began back in 1948. The Defender is set to retire in 2015, following 67 years of production. Seen as an example of highly rugged British engineering, the Defender went on to conquer the world, thanks to its go-anywhere ability.

Land Rover plans to replace the Defender with a new model, based on the DC100 Concept . That said, the legacy of the original Defender has rendered it with "classic" status.

A. Kahn Design specializes in the customization of Land Rovers and its latest creation is based on a Defender 2.2 TDCi. Kahn likes to call it the Land Rover Defender 2.2 TDCi SW 90 Chelsea Wide Track.

Kahn retained the classic shape of the Defender, but the subtle detailing make this Kahn Design Defender rather special.

The Range Rover Sport is one of those SUV s that doesn’t really need to a whole lot to grab attention. But if an aftermarket company is willing to give it some added shine, we doubt the SUV will have any complaints about it.

One of the best tuners for Range Rovers happens to be really good at things like this and at the 2013 Essen Motor Show , Startech presented a program that took a pretty long time to build. Then again, with programs of this quality, you can’t short change the time it takes to get it up in full swing.

Designed to further enhance the Range Rover Sport’s already appealing visage, the Startech program comes with a load of new features, the most prominent of which are new body components, including a new front bumper with larger air intakes and hooked up with LED daytime running lights. At the rear, a new diffuser was also installed, as well as a stainless-steel sports exhaust system, adding that throatier response that will be of good use with the performance kit added under the SUV’s hood.

Rounding out the exterior mods is a set of 22-inch alloy wheels and a suspension lowering module that can drop the SUV’s ride height by about 25 mm (0.98 inches).

Meanwhile, the interior’s been spruced up with some fine upholstery material, something the Range Rover Sport deserves. Be it premium leather or Alcantara, the material is nothing but top-of-the-line and complemented nicely by carbon-fiber and exotic-wood trim.

Finally, this program wouldn’t be complete without any performance mods and that’s exactly what Startech did. The tuner equipped the SUV with an SD30 S tuning kit, driving up the output of the Range Rover Sport to 323 horsepower and 501 pound-feet of torque, which is a nice jump from the stock 258 horsepower and 600 Nm (443 pound-feet) of torque from the stock 3.0-liter turbo-diesel engine. This power allows the vehicle to hit 62 mph in 6.9 seconds to go with a top speed of 138 mph.

There is something about Black Friday that brings out the crazy in people. Trampled store employees and fistfights over the latest Elmo doll in the toy aisle have become an unfortunate yearly tradition only hours after observing Thanksgiving. It’s ironic to say the least.

But perhaps equally as ironic is the idea of a station wagon hitting 60 mph in under four seconds while hauling a trunk-full of Christmas presents for the whole family. We’re not afraid to explore the ironic here at TopSpeed, so we compiled a list of vehicles we would use to snag all those infamous Black Friday deals.

These Black Friday cargo haulers had to be fast enough to outrun other shoppers, have enough cargo room to haul a flat-screen TV with other boxes stacked around, and flashy enough to let others know you mean business.

Scroll on down for TopSpeed’s top-10 list of Black Friday deal-getters and why we chose them. Leave a comment on which one you would be driving.

Next to the 2 Series Coupe we brought you earlier today, BMW also equipped the X5 SUV with a series of updates offered by its M Performance subsidiary. Just like with the coupe, the updated SUV will be available starting March 2014 and includes a series of updates to both the exterior and the interior, plus a more powerful engine.

The X5 xDrive35i received a modified engine control system that increases the final output by 20 horsepower - up to a total of 326 horsepower and 36 pound-feet of torque. The extra power was combined with an optimized accelerator pedal set-up that will improve the spontaneous response of the engine and will optimize performance.

For the X5 xDrive35i BMW is also offering a M Performance silencer system plus a M Performance tailpipe trim elements available either in chrome or carbon.

BMW X2

The folks over at BMW Blog report that sources close to German magazine Autobild say BMW’s got a couple new SUVs planned for the near future. Coming out first is the new two-door X2 scheduled for shipment in 2016. It’s said to be based on the UKL front-drive platform that will also underpin the second-generation X1 .

BMW Blog says the X2 will also share the X1’s powertrain lineup that includes a three- and four-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. Keep in mind, the diesels will likely stay in Europe if or when they debut. A hybrid variant may well be on the drawing board as well. We suspect a hybrid X2 would make a highly respectable option for inner city customers looking to make a statement while cutting fuel costs.

Less is known about the possible X7 SUV . This is not the first time BMW Blog has reported on an X7 as they covered its initial media leak and then purported demise, as BMW supposedly didn’t feel the need for a large full-size SUV at the time. The magazine does however dive into the possibility of three different plug-in hybrid systems for all X Series models. Included is a three-cylinder offered in front-wheel-drive only; a four-cylinder engine offered in rear-drive X3 and X4 models; and a six-cylinder offered in four-wheel drive for the X5,X6, and possible X7. Stay tuned to TopSpeed for any breaking news on the topics.
