The 2015 GMC Canyon is expected to be unveiled on January 12th at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, and GMC has just released the first teaser image of the upcoming midsize pickup. As expected, the image reveals nearly nothing, but we do expect the new Canyon to be highly influenced by the 2015 Colorado we saw at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show .

Earlier this year, GM president Mark Reuss said "GMC will be more about conquest. The Chevy will be about value," which leads us to believe that there will be some significant differences between the Colorado and Canyon, unlike the nearly identical duo we saw in the last generation.

When it comes to the Canyon’s design language, it should borrow some design cues from the 2014 GMC Sierra . Under its hood, it will offer the same engines we saw in the Colorado, including a 2.5-liter in-line four and a 3.6-liter V-6. A 2.8-liter Duramax turbo-diesel engine could also arrive in 2016.

Updated 01/13/2014: The 2015 GMC Canyon made its world debut at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show, so we’ve added all the official details, images and specs.

Updated 04/29/2014: GMC unveiled a new video in which it explains how the rear can be adjusted to accommodate a child’s car seat.

Audi Q4

Usually, future product offensive and market strategy is a close a guarded secret in any organization. However, there are ways to dig out information that could give us some idea as what goes on behind closed doors. Autocar recently got access to trademark applications filed by Audi which clearly reveal some of the models that could enter production in the near future.

The documents show a few SUVs that Audi plans to introduce into the market. Starting with the much talked about Q2 , Audi wants to launch a high performance version based on the Q2, dubbed "SQ2". The company has already committed to a Range Rover Evoque rivaling Q4 and SQ4 on the aforementioned lines.

In recent times, the market has seen increased demand for luxury SUVs. Audi sees this as an opportunity to spread its wings. The company has trademarked the name "Q9" for a future large SUV. They also have plans to offer fuel-cell technology in their road cars. Hence the name "f-tron" pops up onto the trademarks list.

The Rub’ al Khali, also known as The Empty Quarter, is the largest sand desert in the world, with a length of 620 miles, a width of 310 miles and an area of 250,000 square miles. With average temperatures of 117 degrees F, you can imagine that the desert is not the most pleasant place on Earth.

But this particular place on Earth was seen as a challenge by the engineers at Land Rover and they sent a Range Rover Sport over to this barren land to see how fast it can cross it.

The result is a new record , with an average speed of 51.87 mph (81.87 km/h), the Range Rover Sport managed to make the 527-mile journey from Wadi Adda Wasir in Saudi Arabia to the border of the United Arab Emirates in just 10 hours and 22 minutes.

The video released today by Land Rover features spectacular footage from inside and outside the vehicle, as well as epic shots of the environment that the team faced as they tackled the largest sand desert in the world.

The car that challenged this massive sandbox was a stock Range Rover Sport equipped with standard tires and an underbody protection plate, which goes to show just how awesome the Range Rover Sport is.

When the going gets tough, it’s time to summon the Toyota Land Cruiser . When it comes to go-anywhere ability, the only vehicle that has managed to stand its ground against the Land Rover is the Toyota Land Cruiser, which in itself has earned a legendary status. For the year 2013, Toyota updated the Land Cruiser with added standard features and a styling overhaul.

Now, for the year 2014, Toyota has brought an evolutionary design change to the Land Cruiser. It may look different, but underneath it still is more or less the same burly, all-wheel-drive SUV with loads of features and creature comforts.

Like most heavy-duty off-roaders, the 2014 Land Cruiser is based on a body-on-frame platform that gives it added strength to take on the roughest of terrains the world can throw at it.

Over the past 60 years, the Land Cruiser has evolved from a manual select, all-wheel-drive utility vehicle into a luxurious SUV packed with the latest electronic aides, cameras and safety features. Has the addition of computer programs and guidance systems made exploring the farthest reaches of this planet child’s play? Lets find out.

We’ve known for quite some time now that 2014 will be the final year for the current-generation Honda Ridgeline , but an official confirmation came today when Honda released the first teaser image of the next-generation pickup and announced that it is set to arrive "within two years."

According to Honda officials, the "next-generation Ridgeline will build on Honda’s role in creating new value with a new take on advancing form and function in the truck segment." Also, it looks like the next Ridgeline will play an important role in Honda’s future "product portfolio and strengthen an already class-leading lineup of light trucks."

The current Ridgeline enjoyed relatively decent success in a market that’s starving for midsize pickups. In fact, sales in 2013 grew by 29 percent, thanks in part to the addition of the new top-of-the-line Special Edition model for 2014, with sales totaling 16,160 units. This jump in sales can also be credited to a relative lack of competition in the midsize truck realm. That said, the Ridgeline will have an all-new, midsize Chevy Colorado to contend with when it does return in a few years.

Honda failed to reveal any information on what will power the new Ridgeline, but we suspect the same V-6 powertrain, but with output closer to the 300-horsepower mark. A four-cylinder setup is a possibility, given the Colorado has a four-pot offering, so keep an eye out for that too.

Land Rover Defender

WhatCar? reports that Land Rover could launch a pickup version based on the next-generation Defender. The news broke after Land Rover design boss Gerry McGovern explained that the pickup can only be launched when more conventional models of the Defender hit the market.

Now, Land Rover is planning to introduce the new Defender in the year 2016, this according to reports, which will be available in five- and seven-seat configurations, and permanent all-wheel drive. The WhatCar? report goes on to say that the upcoming Defender pickup would be a premium offering with all-wheel drive as standard. It is touted to rival the Volkswagen Amarok

The pickup version will only come in a five-seat, crew-cab configuration with permanent all-wheel drive. Traditionally, the Land Rover Defender has been available in various body styles, including hard top, soft top, wagon, utility wagon, chassis cab, double cab, etc. The rugged Defender platform has proven to be versatile, which can be tailored for specific applications.

Land Rover Range Rover Sport

In 2013, Land Rover introduced a totally new generation of its flagship Range Rover and Range Rover Sport SUVs. The brand is known to produce some of the finest premium off-road luxury vehicles in the world and it did not come as a surprise to us when the world bestowed it with praise, as has been the case with Land Rovers historically.

Yes, the Range Rover has grown into a mature off-road vehicle and is in league of its own, when it comes to luxury motoring. While, the Range Rover sits at the top of the food chain, its smaller sibling, the Range Rover Sport , has had its fair share of successes. MotorTrend magazine honored the RR Sport with the coveted ’SUV of the Year’ and now Four Wheeler Magazine has awarded the Range Rover Sport with "Four Wheeler of the Year" for 2013.

This is the third time a Land Rover SUV has won this award after intense and grueling testing both on tarmac and on rugged terrain designed to test the off-road capabilities of the vehicle.

"It is a great achievement for the very luxurious and performance oriented Range Rover Sport to be named ’Four Wheeler of the Year,’ by the country’s oldest four-wheel drive enthusiast publication," said Kim McCullough, Brand Vice President, Land Rover North America.

Big, bad and ready to rumble, this Land Rover Range Rover means all sorts of business. And then some.

In some respects, that’s what you expect from an aftermarket company like Arden, which has specialized in these types of programs for Range Rovers. It’s latest take is no different, and yet when you take into account the kind of performance upgrade it gave the SUV , you stand and wonder if it could’ve been more.

That’s the respect we have for Arden.

But hey, this tuning program is still a whale of an upgrade, something Arden achieved by giving the Range Rover a supercharger kit, a new sport catalytic converter, an optimized ECU unit and a high-performance exhaust system. Considering that the standard Range Rover’s 5.0-liter, V-8 engine can produce a tight 510 horses and 461 pound-feet of torque, it’s an impressive feat that Arden was able to spike the numbers to a staggering 650 horsepower and 580 pound-feet of torque. This is good enough to improve the SUV’s 0-to-60 mph time from 5.3 seconds to somewhere around 3.8 and before hitting a top speed of 161 mph.

No word yet on how much this program is going to cost, but with the promise of 650 horsepower to play around with, we’ve no doubt that it’s going to set customers back a few bucks.

The current-generation Mercedes M-Class (W166) was unveiled in 2011, as a 2012 model, and since then it hasn’t received any major updates. Things are about to change, however, as it looks like a revision for the ML is just around the corner, as our spy photographers managed to snap the first photos of the revised ML during winter testing.

As you can see from these spy shots, it looks like only the front and the rear sections will be updated. The interior will also receive a large iPad-like screen on the dashboard and the new COMAND infotainment controller with a touchpad on the center console.

We also expect to see a few changes under the hood, with a plug-in-hybrid version being a possibility.

The revised ML will be released in late 2014, as a 2015 model. It will join the MLC — the model that will take on the BMW X6 — in Mercedes’ crossover lineup.

Updated 12/23/2013: The upcoming Mercedes M-Class was caught testing again, this time on the public German roads.
