Volkswagen Scirocco

Volkswagen made today official the Scirocco, a model that started its history 34 years ago. Prices will start at €27,490 for the 1.4L TSI petrol variant with 120hp.

With a length of 4.26 meters, the Scirocco is on par with the Golf. However, it is built significantly lower to the ground (1.40 meter) and is nearly as wide as the Passat (1.81 meter). Four adults can be seated with plenty of space inside. Once they are all aboard, the Scirocco provides 292 liters of cargo capacity; when the two seatbacks of the rear individual sport seats are folded down, capacity increases to a considerable 755 liters. This contemporary Scirocco demonstrates unfettered everyday utility, and it can be clearly recommended as a sports car for every day of the year.

Providing for ample power on the Scirocco – which comes with ESP and sport chassis as standard equipment – are four TDI and TSI engines, all of them charged and therefore just as torque-strong as they are economical and low in emissions. The three TSI (gasoline direct-injection) output 90 kW / 122 PS, 118 kW / 160 PS and 147 kW / 200 PS. The Scirocco’s common rail engine (TDI) develops a power of 103 kW / 140 PS. The 122 PS TSI takes the car to a top speed of 200 km/h. This 160 PS TSI takes the Scirocco from rest to 100 km/h in 8.0 seconds; its top speed is 217 km/h. With the 200 PS engine, the Scirocco makes the 0 to 60 mph in 7.2 seconds and hits a top speed of 235 km/h.

Volkswagen Scirocco GT24-CNG

VW is taking a green racer to the Green Hell. This May it will bring two versions of the Scirocco GT24 to the 24-Hour Race on the Nürburgring powered by natural gas. VW says the 2.0-liter turbo engine will make “nearly 300 hp” and is a testbed for future applications.

VW Scirocco will get a R20T version

The Volkswagen Scirocco has been accused of being a Golf in wolf’s clothing because of the multitude parts shared. But now this is finally going to be used to the Scirocco’s advantage if it gets a version of the engine in the upcoming Golf R20 .

We picked up on this rumor many months ago , but now there are also spy shots of the Scirocco testing with the 270 hp 2.0-liter turbocharged engine. While we haven’t had the opportunity to personally pilot the car because VW slammed the door on a U.S.-spec Scirocco , friends overseas have applauded the car’s suspension but have prayed from more power. So now maybe VW is listening.

To help distinguish the R20 from other Sciroccos, VW may use the larger air intake and rear wing found on the Scirocco Study R . The total package may make for an appealing car, but U.S. fans shouldn’t get too excited. If VW is leaving out the Scirocco here because it would cannibalize sales from the GTI, then it’s doubtful VW would take the chance on the much smaller production numbers of the R20.

VW Scirocco by B&B

The German aftermarket company B&B is the latest tuner to have a go at the new Volkswgen Scirocco . B&B not only modify the exterior of the Scirocco with a Caractere body kit , but also increase the output to six different levels depending on the customer’s needs.

VW Scirocco bodykit by Caractere

The tuning firm Caractere has just released their new bodykit for the 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco . The kit consists of new front and rear bumpers, a grill inspired by the GTi, a subtle and a set of aggressive side skirts. Fitting inside of the Caractere rear bumper are a set of unique exhaust tips. The Scirocco can be equipped with the CW1 wheels measuring 18, 19 or 20 inches. Hopefully the kit will be offered in the U.S. if Volkswagen ever confirms an American Scirocco.

One thing is certain, lowering CO2 emission and improving fuel economy is one of the main concerns of today’s auto makers. According to Volkswagen’s research and development Chief Dr Ulrich Hackenburg, “we can make a connection between fun, performance and low consumption”.

According to Hackenburg, Volkswagen will most likely come out with BlueMotion versions of their sport compacts the Scirocco and the GTI . However if these versions come to market it will not be before 2011, and like the concept in Geneva , they would wear the BlueSport badge, creating the perfect blend of fuel economy and fun.

Besides the Scirocco BlueSport and GTI Bluesport, Volkswagen is also working on producing even more economical R models. The Scirocco R20T concept has already been shown and it is almost certain that VW will replace the 3.2 liter VR6 in the Golf R32 with something less thirsty .
Dr Hackenburg said that the two models may not get a V6 engine, but "what we [VW] are able to do is to make a Golf with the same performance but a smaller engine, which is anyway better for handling."

So whether Volkswagen decides to turn up the boost on some diesel motors or downsize and turbocharge what they already have, one thing is certain. Volkswagen is committed to building automobiles that are fun to drive and at the same time environmentally conscious.

Like all classics the Volkswagen Scirocco will never get old, most recently Swiss tuners Sportec have devised a system for upgrading the next generation Scirocco. They are doing this through performance upgrades, the addition of a tuned suspension and a little bit of style.

For the Scirocco that comes equiped with a 200 HP 2.0- liter engine performance upgrades are available from 240 HP up to 350 HP. This is achieved with upgraded electronics, a stainless steel exhaust system, the addition of a Sportec turbocharger, an upgraded intercooler and a modified fuel delivery system. Included in the drivetrain is differential locker by Sportec, this unit will help the Volkswagen to get the power to the ground evenly and improve performance in spirited driving. The Sportec springs lower the new Scirocco by 35 mm and significantly improve the car’s handling. The springs were also designed to work in harmony with the electronically adjustable shock-absorbers.

The Sportec SC 350 is not just a high-performance parts bin, but a well rounded performance machine. Highlighting the car’s appearance are a set of beautiful lightweight 20 inch Sportec Mono/10 alloys wrapped in 245/30 tires. Under the hood a carbonfiber engine cover adds some show to the car’s go, and on the inside passengers can enjoy special floormats made of soft velour and even more carbonfiber bits sporting the Sportec logo.

Sportec usually works on Porsches, but this time it set its sights on a product from the Stuttgart company’s latest purchase, the Volkswagen Scirocco . Dubbed the SC240, this Scirocco comes with a 240 hp engine. The upgrade happens from an ECU remapping and a new sport exhaust system. This is impressive considering the 2.0-liter model makes 197 hp from the factory.

Sportec has given us just another reason to lust after this VW we can’t get our hands on here.

The Volkswagen Scirocco is proving to be tuner car favorite. This makes sense because although the car looks unique, the car is heavily based on existing VW parts. Many tuners already have parts that will bolt right on, and the Scirocco is more rare and carries less of a family resemblance than a VW Golf/Rabbit. In fact, since the Scirocco is not sold in the U.S., it may just become the new favorite grey market import like the R32 through R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R.

So for a car this unique, why would a tuner like Rieger make a body kit that makes the Scirocco look like an Audi R8 ? Sure the R8 is a cool car, and Audi is in the VW family, but the Scirocco should have earned enough credit to keep its own personality. Any customer that must go with Rieger should probably pick one of its two other bumper designs.
