The Volkswagen Karmann-Ghia was manufactured for almost twenty years - from 1955 to 1974 - with only minor changes to its design. This is an achievement that few other automobiles in its class can claim.

With a total of 360,000 coupés and approximately 80,000 convertibles produced, the Karmann-Ghia was also a commercial success, both in Europe and the USA.

At the present time, approximately 3,500 Karmann-Ghias are still believed to be registered in Germany.

Despite its beautiful, sporty exterior, there is nothing but simple VW-beetle engineering beneath the Karmann-Ghia's hood. Such technology makes it robust, but at approximately 43 hp, it cannot be called a sports car. However, thanks to its light weight (1851 lbs) and aerodynamic design, it is fast enough for everyday purposes. Thus even today many Karmann-Ghias can still achieve maximum speeds of 93 mph - assuming that they still possess the original beetle motor.
