Joining the Volkswagen range between the Golf hot hatch and the Passat saloon, Bora has received a wealth of accolades including being named 'most driver-friendly modern car' by Auto Express magazine. This impressive mid-range saloon comes with high equipment levels and a wide range of engines.

A five-speed manual gearbox is used to transmit the power of the petrol engines of up to 110 kW (150 bhp) and of the TDI of 74 kW (100 bhp). The more powerful versions are equipped with a six-speed manual gearbox. The 1.6-litre petrol engine with 75 kW/102 bhp is only available with automatic transmission, which is also available for four other engine variants.

The spacious interior with its carefully chosen combination of cloth upholstery and other trim gives an impression of distinguished elegance. Of particular excellence is the ergonomic design of the interior. The driver's seat, for instance, is continuously height adjustable and the steering wheel is adjustable for both reach and rake.

With a volumetric capacity of 455 litres, the boot of the saloon is more than adequate. The versatile luggage compartment of the estate has an additional special feature: a variable cargo floor under the floor of the boot. A storage compartment is here with a number of practical shelves. It can be removed as required, increasing the height of the boot accordingly.

Even the basic version is equipped generously, including electric windows at front and rear, electrically adjustable and heated external mirrors, air conditioning (Climatronic for the FSI), power steering, central locking, a colour strip in the windscreen and a split folding rear seat backrest (60:40).

The standard safety equipment is just as extensive, consisting of airbags for the driver and front passenger, side air bags at the front, side head airbags, disc brakes at the back and front, an anti-lock braking system controlled electronically and an electronic stability programme (ESP) including braking assistant. There are also installation points under the back seat for the stable attachment of child seats in accordance with the Isofix standard. Optional extras for the Bora include such items as a radio navigation system, xenon headlights, 16-inch wheels and electrically adjustable front seats.

The exterior: not only does the body of the Bora look powerful, dynamic and compact, it is also manufactured in accordance with high quality standards. Technologies applied during production such as laser welding and punch riveting ensure a level of body rigidity usually only achieved in the luxury class sector. The high level of torsional rigidity of the body has two advantages: on the one hand, torsion and inherent movement of the body including the resulting noises are suppressed.  On the other hand, the very tight gap dimensions at the doors and bonnets of the Bora can only be achieved this way. The driving characteristics and dynamics of the Bora benefit likewise from this aspect. The fully galvanised body ensures high long-term value of the Bora - reason enough for Volkswagen to grant a twelve-year warranty against corrosion perforation.

The interior: all plastics within the car are coated with soft lacquer, the pillar panelling has cloth trims. As a consequence, the entire interior has an inviting appearance with a sense of high quality. The five seats in the Bora are suited ideally for long distances. The front seats are mounted on rollers, making them easily adjustable lengthwise. In addition, the height of the driver's seat can be mechanically continuously adjusted. Furthermore, the steering wheel can be adjusted vertically and axially.

The electrically adjustable 8-way seat - available for the "Highline" at extra charge - is extremely comfortable. In addition to the convenience of being able to adjust the seat electrically using the control buttons on the side of the seat, the seat's memory feature can be used to store various positions for the driver's seat that can then be selected either at the touch of a button or using the remote control unit of the central locking system. At the same time, the outside mirrors automatically move to the individual position previously selected. Furthermore, the outside mirror on the front passenger side can be programmed to swing down automatically towards the kerb whenever reverse gear is selected, making it easier to back up the car.

There are storage pockets on the backs of the front seats to accommodate small items. There is a fold-down central armrest in the rear seat backrest with a built-in storage compartment. The rear seat backrest of the saloon can be locked, making it possible for items to be stored safely. The luggage compartment of the four-door car has an impressive volumetric capacity of 455 litres with the rear seat in upright position. This value is increased to 785 litres if the rear seat is folded.

The estate, of course, has a great deal more loading space: 460 litres up to the bottom of the window with the rear seat in upright position and up to 1,470 litres if the rear seat is folded. Furthermore, the boots of both versions are lined with high-grade material. As a standard, the rear seat backrest of the saloon is divided into sections (60:40) which can be folded forwards. With the estate, which has a removable variable cargo floor, the bottom part of the seat can also be folded forwards. The loading edge of the estate is protected and refined by a Nirosta stainless steel plate. Four lashing eyes ensure there is no risk of the load sliding about.
