2011 Volkswagen Golf R by APS

Volkswagen’s highly popular sports hatch, the Golf R , is gearing up to conquer new territories after the company finally confirmed its plans of launching the vehicle in the North American market. As such, we’re not that surprised that tuning firms are likewise releasing their own performance packages for the sports hatch. A bigger market for the car will result in a bigger market for these aftermarket companies.

Easy as A-B-C, right?

One tuning company that has released a new performance upgrade for the Golf is APS of Brackley. Actually, the British tuning firm announced that there would be three stages of performance tuning for the all-wheel drive Golf R, beginning with a Stage 1 program that only includes a remapping of the sports hatch’s engine control unit. This modification will bump up the 2.0-liter TFSI’s output from 267 horsepower to 308 horsepower. The package comes with a price tag of £445.00, or around $705.

Continued after the jump.

For a more detailed and comprehensive modification, APS is also offering the Stage 2 package, which consists, among other things, a new Milltek large bore turbo down pipe, high flow sports catalyst, and a choice of Milltek stainless steel sports exhausts. These exhausts bring with them a switchable electronic exhaust valve, 2.75 inch bore tubing, and dual 100mm ceramic black tailpipes.

According to APS, customers who opt for the Stage 2 upgrade can choose between two types of exhausts: a Milltek non-resonated cat-back system that ‘emphasizes performance and aural excitement’ or a resonated Milltek cat back exhaust that ‘majors on refinement and also benefits from EC type approval’. Whatever type of exhaust you end up choosing, APS has said that the Stage 2 package for the Golf R will raise its peak power to somewhere around 320-330 horsepower. This package is being sold for £1999, or about $3,165.

APS also has a Stage 3 package for the Volkswagen sports hatch that is still in its development stage. The tuning firm likewise said that with this package, the Golf R’s output can be bumped further to around 350 horsepower.

Aside from the power upgrades, APS is also offering a range of chassis upgrades for the Golf R, including a three-way adjustable Haldex Gen4 four wheel drive controller, sports lowering springs, a KW height and damping adjustable coilover suspension, uprated suspension bushes, Brembo GT big brake kits, and a set of 18” and 19” Sportec Mono 10 forged alloy wheels with Toyo tires.

This is the most affordable hatchback car last year! I don’t like the aftermarket version of this car because I don’t think that it has upgraded the power truly.

Wow! So this is the most powerful hatch? If I’m not mistaken it also comes in affordable price..It look so powerful also.

Nice! I love the simple design and look of the Golf. This is the best hatchback for me. And compare to its competitor this one has the cheapest price.

Golf R is so much expensive in Europe and its very crucial. Plus if you add those fancy leather, xenon headlights I think you will reach up to $40K. There are a lot of better in car out in the market and less expensive!

I’m not trashing VW. If that’s what ya’ll think then it’s wrong. I know the history of VW. They topped engineering and craftsmanship decades ago. I definitely know the Golf will be one of the most exciting cars out there, especially for under 40k.I’m done with it. Made this bigger than it was supposed to be.. I’ll shut up now. Sorry MT

for me i would rather have this than having a ford focus or a piece of crap mazdaspeed3.

lovely looking hatchback, i guess this car is the tightest competitor of mazdaspeed3. to be honest many are having some difficulties on choosing on both cars in europe.

I will say that at least the quality of the interior, seats and materials is generally better that that of WRX, Ralliart, or MS3. It was what actually kept it in the game when I was shopping for a new car last year.

I guess it is, they advertising the ECU chip to sell more over the market.. this is a good marketing strategy.

Is this advertising or news? Anyone with a GTi knows they can swap out the turbo for a K04, tune the ECU and get around 300HP crank for about $2500.

See how easy is it to get another 70+hp from a Turbo motor? Try that with an N/A engine.

Any improvement over the base car is a good thing. I hope they will give some ideas to VW to make the next Golf cooler!

If you try to make an arrow from a piece of s**t, it will still be a piece of the same material smiley
