The seventh generation Volkswagen Golf has just been unveiled and now we’re all waiting to see the official details on the new GTI version . However, until then we may have a few more good news for you: it looks like Volkswagen is also preparing a lightweight performance version of the GTI.
The new model - rumored to be called Carbon GTI - will be built with the extensive use of carbon fiber and aluminum and will be about 440 lbs lighter than the standard GTI. In order to obtain this amazing weight reduction, the front bulkhead, windscreen surround and floor panels will be made in lightweight aluminum, while the roof and bonnet will be built from hi-tech carbon fiber.
Under the hood we will see the same 222 HP turbo 2.0-litre engine as in the standard GTI, but thanks to its lower weight, the upcoming Carbon GTI will sprint from 0 to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds.
The new Golf Carbon GTI will be launched in 2014 to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Volkswagen Golf and will be built in limited edition.
