I have an unnatural love for most of Volkswagen’s->ke94 wares, especially it behatched offerings. I love them so much I paid my own money to park a Golf->ke164 in my driveway, but the Golf is not my favorite Volkswagen. That honor belongs to the sleek and sexy Scirocco->ke1517. Of all the Sciroccos the bonkers AWD Scirocco R is the greatest.

Unfortunately the Scirocco R is not for US consumption, and my epic lust is getting even worse as Volkswagen has just announced an updated version. With a revised exterior design, even more power and new interior trim, my favorite hatchback is getting even better.

The newest model of the Scirocco will be unveiled as a 2014 model at the Geneva Motor Show->ke228 in a few shorts weeks. To tide us over until then Volkswagen has released all the details about the updated car, and even gave us a few photos to boot.

Exterior

The exterior of the Scirocco has always been one of its defining features. Its swooping profile and aggressive front end made it look like the fastest and angriest Golf ever created. The R version took that aggression and turned it up a few notches. The new car follows that same formula.

The overall shape of the new Scirocco R hasn’t changed from current car, this is just an exterior refresh, but the changes they have made are quite noticeable. The front end of the car has been altered to make it sharper, more in line with the Mk VII Golf design and the intakes are larger. The headlights are a completely new design and feature a new LED daytime running lamp arrangement. A new front lip spoiler adds some extra aggression to the face of the R.

The long doors, R-design side sill extensions and 18-inch alloy wheels dominate the profile of the Scirocco R. A set of 19-inch alloys is also available. To add a little extra visual flair the brake calipers are painted black and feature “R” logos, while the mirror housings are finished in matte chrome.

Most of the horizontal lines on the rear have the car have been accentuated to make the Scirocco R look wider and more planted. The new LED taillamps help in this mission with their elongated inserts. The bumper features large air outlets on each side and there are two chrome exhaust outlets as well. The rear of the Scirocco R also has a much larger rear spoiler than the standard car.

Interior

The changes to the interior of the Scirocco R are far less extensive than the outside alterations, but when Volkswagen already makes some of the best interiors in the class there is not much that needs changing.

The noticeable R model differences include “Race” seats covers that include “R” logos and decorative stitching. A black headliner, carbon fiber-look inlays and piano black trim add a touch of sporty class to the cabin. The custom “R” model instruments feature blue needles and the pedals are made of stainless steel. Overall, the inside of the Sicrocco R appears to be a lovely place to spend some time.

Drivetrain

The real secret to the Scirocco R’s appeal is its engine. It may only be a 2.0-liter four-cylinder but its turbocharged and it pumps out 276 horsepower. That power is routed to all-four wheels via a Haldex AWD system. The result is a rally-ready rocket like a Subaru WRX, except the Scirocco is built well and isn’t as ugly as a troll.

Transmission options will be either a six-speed manual or the DSG dual-clutch automatic.

Prices

Pricing for the newest Scirocco has yet to be announced, but don't expect prices to budge too far from todays MSRP.

Competition

Mazdaspeed 3

The Mazdaspeed 3 is a turbocharged wagon of fire and fury. With its 263-horsepower engine, it should be nearly as fast as the Scirocco R, but its FWD only, so it struggles to put its power down. The result is a slightly undriveable wagon that is capable of insane speeds. It may be hard to drive, but it sure is a blast.

Subaru WRX

With a similar 2.0-liter turbocharged engine and AWD, the Subaru WRX is a close competitor to the Scirocco R. Of course, the Subaru has a reputation for having terrible interior quality and styling only a blind mother would love. Still for pure performance, the Scirocco R will have its hands full trying to outdo the little Japanese machine.

Conclusion

The new 2015 Scirocco R is equal parts exciting and beautiful. It has a design that screams “go faster” and the power to make it happen. Yes, the two door design with its sloping roof makes it much less practical for rear passengers than the Golf R, but that is missing the point. If want a good looking three-door with insane speed, AWD performance and German refinement, the Scirocco R is the best choice.

No it won't be sold in the USA, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't love it.
