2011 Volvo C70

Volvo will unveil a revised version of the C70 Convertible at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September. The C70 is the first model from the Swedish automaker to feature design elements from the S60 Concept Car that was unveiled earlier this year.

Volvo C70

Making up the restyled Volvo C70 includes a set of redesigned front fenders, a much more wedge shaped nose, new crystal like headlamps and some new trim surrounding the foglamps and the lower grille. For 2011, the C70 Convertible is being offered with three gas burning and two diesel engines: first is the T5 turbocharged five cylinder making 230 HP, the 2.4i pumping out 170 HP, the 2.4 cranking out 140 HP. The diesel mills consist of the D5 making 180 HP and the 2.0D that produces 136 HP.

The new Volvo C70 has been engineered to be one of the safest convertibles on the market, with regards to both active and passive safety. The car has an advanced body structure and several solutions that are unique to the C70 in the world of open top cars. The lack of a fixed roof doesn’t compromise the convertible’s structural integrity and has been compensated for by structural reinforcements and other sophisticated technology.

Updated 01/22/10: The new Volvo C70, in USA offered as a 2011 model, will go on sale at a price of just $39,950. Volvo will also offer a a Convenience Package for $1,000, a Multimedia Package for $2,600, a Dynamic Trim Package for $1,000 and a Climate Package for $900. Hit the jump to get full pricing list.

Press release after the jump.

Press release

The new Volvo C70 launched at the Frankfurt Motor Show in mid-September has the same smart three-piece steel roof, practical seating for four adults and world-leading convertible safety as before. With an updated design and elevated premium feel, the C70 also delivers an "I want" aura of absolute world class.

Volvo C70

The Volvo C70 is in actual fact two attractive cars in one. It is as much an elegant coupe as it is a sporty convertible. With the same gentle, clean lines in both versions. Above all, however, the Volvo C70 is a car to enjoy. For people who reward themselves with the best in life.

"The Volvo C70 has classic convertible lines and a strong identity of its own. What we have done is to carefully redesign the front and rear so they harmonise more with both today’s and tomorrow’s Volvo models. We have also increased the exclusiveness of the materials and trim details to enhance the atmosphere of luxury and enjoyment inside the car," explains Fedde Talsma, Exterior Chief Designer at Volvo Cars.

Modernised, self-assured front

Volvo C70

With its new front, the Volvo C70 reveals traces of the S60 Concept Car that was unveiled in early 2009. Thereby the C70 is upgraded to relate more closely to the design language of the larger cars in the Volvo model range

Bodywork details such as the front wings have also been redesigned, contributing to the decidedly altered appearance. The nose is more wedge-shaped and has been given added three-dimensional depth by moving some elements of the front both longitudinally and vertically. The new headlamps and the décor around the foglamps, for instance, have been angled offset up and to the rear, at the same time as the detailing of the lower grille has been enhanced.

Volvo C70

From head-on, the front forms an open, inviting "V". The enlarged iron mark and the new, larger air intake reinforce the self-assured stance. Owners who want to be seen even more can specify a dramatic new red colour, Flamenco Red Pearl.

"The new C70 has a clearer, more pronounced face. The car’s natural elegance has been modernised so it blends seamlessly with the most up-to-date, the most sophisticated backdrops," says Fedde Talsma.

Exclusive new rear design

Volvo C70

The exclusive high-tech LED lamps, of the same type as found on the Volvo XC60, are the most noticeable update at the rear. The entire lamp unit is clearly integrated with the oval that frames the new C70’s rear panel.

As at the front, new lines and details in the bumper and elsewhere have been integrated to emphasise the depth and dynamism of the design language.

Interior that rewards the driver

The interior has been updated in several respects to create a unique ambience in the Volvo C70. The instrument panel has been redesigned, giving it a wider, sleeker look and the surface of the panel has a new texture that enhances the feeling of quality.

The exclusive new instruments, with gauges and graphics specific to the C70, are yet another example of how the car’s premium feel has been emphasised still further.

"We’ve focused the new interior features around the driver to give the owner a stronger perception of being rewarded behind the wheel. The seats are upholstered in a new type of soft hide and there is even better detail finish to make driving a more pleasurable experience than ever before," continues Fedde Talsma.

World-leading safety among convertibles

The new Volvo C70 has been engineered as one of the safest convertibles on the market, as regards both preventive and protective safety. The car has an advanced body structure and several solutions that are unique in the world of open cars. The lack of a fixed roof has been compensated by structural reinforcements and sophisticated technology.

Volvo C70

Protection in roll-over accidents

The Volvo C70 has sturdy metal hoops that shoot up behind the rear seat passengers to create added protective survival space should the car roll over. These hoops, which are part of Volvo’s Rollover Protection System - ROPS - are activated by a gyro-sensor. Sin Sin ce the Volvo C70 has a proper glass rear window, the hoops shoot up through the glass if the roof is up. They have therefore been fitted with small hardened metal spikes that break the glass to guarantee proper protective function.

Unique door-mounted inflatable curtain

Volvo C70

One important part of the side-impact and rollover protection is the inflatable curtain, IC, which is installed in the door since there is no roof rail in which to fit it. The curtain has an extra-stiff design featuring twin rows of panels that are offset somewhat in relation to one another. As a result, the curtain can remain upright and help protect the head in an effective way even if the window is open. What is more, the curtain deflates slowly, helping to provide added protection should the car roll over.

Side-impact airbags and safety belt pre-tensioners for all seats

In addition to the inflatable curtains on either side, the front seat occupants also have side-impact airbags. The size of these bags is dimensioned to shield both the chest and hips. What is more, the inflatable curtain interacts with the belt pre-tensioners to contribute to the best possible protection for front seat occupants in a side impact or rollover situation. All four seats come with safety belt pre-tensioners.

Volvo C70

Elegant three-part steel roof

The Volvo C70 transforms smoothly from a cosy coupe into an open convertible. Just press a button and the three-part steel roof folds quickly and silently away, disappearing neatly into the boot.

Prices

Offering the best of both worlds: open air freedom or beautifully sculpted coupe, the 2011 Volvo C70 is offered at a starting price of just $39,950*. The price is inclusive of several standard features that were previously optional and represent an approximate $4,000 savings from a similarly equipped 2010 C70. For 2011, the Volvo C70 comes standard with an automatic 5-speed transmission, SIRIUS satellite radio and luxurious Sovereign Hide leather upholstery.

First seen in the U.S. at the South Florida International Auto Show, the 2011 Volvo C70 receives a bold new look and a number of interior enhancements. With its new front appearance, the 2011 Volvo C70 Volvo C70 reveals traces of the S60 Concept Car that was unveiled in early 2009. The exclusive high-tech LED lights, similar to what’s found on the Volvo XC60, are the most noticeable update at the rear. The entire taillight unit is clearly integrated with the oval that frames the new C70’s rear panel, making the rear appear wider and lower. Like the front end, new lines and details in the bumper and elsewhere have been integrated to emphasise the depth and dynamism of the design language.

Complimenting the enhanced interior are the gorgeous Sovereign hide soft leather seats. This ultra-soft leather covers the entire seat, not simply the seat cushions, owing to a very premium look and feel throughout the interior.

Also new inside, the Cranberry leather seating surfaces (these are not Sovereign hides) is a no-cost option. Taking a cue from these seats is the new-for-2011 Flamenco Red Pearl exterior paint. Combined, they create a truly unique and eye-catching appearance.

One important part of the side-impact and rollover protection is the Inflatable Curtain, IC, which is installed in the door since there is no roof rail to utilize. Volvo C70

The Volvo C70 transforms smoothly from a stylish coupe into an open convertible in about 30 seconds. Just press a button and the three-piece steel roof folds quickly and silently away, disappearing neatly into the trunk.

But the Volvo C70 is about more than safety and an innovative roof. In the U.S., the 2011 C70 is offered with a powerful 227 horsepower turbocharged five-cylinder engine that’s mated to a standard five-speed automatic transmission with driver selectable Geartronic shifting. Power is seamlessly distributed to the front wheels with Volvo’s standard Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC) system.

The 2011 Volvo C70 comes with a new exterior styling and an upgraded interior. It offers a convenient retractable hardtop. Volvo discontinued the six-speed manual transmission. I love the leather upholstery and satellite radio.

Volvo C70 is a complete packaged for me! The angst and the sophisticated look is really there, and it really looks amazing for me, a very satisfying car indeed.

This Volvo C70 is one of the best convertible cars that I saw. I also love the fact that it had an advanced body structure and unique solutions in the world for open cars like this one.

I am so impressed with what the article said about this C70. Well, I love the simplicity of this car, but it is overwhelming with an appeal. It’s one of the versatile cars that I saw.

Yeah! I also noticed that it has the same platform and style with Mercedes. However, I’m still impressed with this C70 and even on it high-tech roof. smiley good thing as well that it has a very efficient engine.

Mercedes has also this kind of vehicle, but in spite that I still find that this C70 is more attractive and impressive than with Mercedes. However, I think that Volvo needs to boost more its engine.

I’m so impressed with the advance body structure, and with the several solution that the articles were saying which I found that is a unique one. This car is very sophisticated and awesome.

I’m not impressed with the interior touch and amenities that this C70 had. It seems so boring, if only they add some entertaining technology on it. As for the looks of it, it’s quite impressive on its exterior appearance.

Audilicous is right. The interior of this C70 seems so boring, and I must say that it is much better if the body paint that they use is white. Anyway, I’m impressed that it had lots of pricing options.

Though the interior of this C70 seems so boring and it doesn’t offer some advanced technologies just like the other cars, I must say that I’am still impressed with this convertible car.

I love the convertible version of the c70 from Volvo, i guess they provide much more revision to its parts especially on the engines.

The interior seems so boring for me and this one had the most simple styling and design in all convertible cars that I saw but it still have an appeal.

Even though it didn’t have an impressive design, I must say that it still oozing with car appeal. I’m impressed with the protection that it had for a roll-over accident.

This Volvo C70 deserves lots of compliments! I am so impressed with the safety features of this convertible car and I love how they put some classy image for this despite of being a simple one.

It’s a good thing that they redesign the car because its older version is not that impressive and productive. I’m actually into convertible cars. I like the way the roofing is removed.

Personally, this looks more like an upside down guitar to me, or just generally high class designer furniture..but to each his own.

wow...starting at 40k? That’s pretty bold Volvo. A fairly decked out S60R didn’t go for much more than that.
