General motors had a meeting last week and agreed to sell some assets to create cash, and also planned to cut some brands in its fleet. The first one to be considered is Hummer since it has very low sales; therefore the life of the hummer is in a dangerous state right now.
Humvee played a crucial role in the 1st gulf war, desert storm. It was an instant success by delivering great protection for US army personal as well as helping coalition forces to win the war.
However times have changed and the US army has ditched humvee for a mine resistant ambush protected vehicle (MRAP) because humvees were getting blown up In Bagdad everyday. Humvees were not able to deliver this time so the army needed to change in order to adapt the environment. MRAP are designed to survive IED attacks and ambushes so US army adapted the environment why can’t GM do same!
So should GM drop the production of hummer and bring the Chevy Volt electric car to the customer? Then maybe they have a better chance to fight against Toyota and Honda‘s admired hybrid and fuel efficient cars.
The main reason hummers sales are down is because of huge gas prices and it is unlikely that sales will go up anytime soon, I think GM should cut the hummer production and move on to producing a more compact and fuel efficient vehicle like the volt in order remain competitive and stay a number one car maker in the world. Although part of me wonders if the H1 should still roll from the assembly line because people who can afford to buy hummer don’t care about the gas prices in the first place, what do you think?
