Audi officially buys Ducati

The ink on the $1 billion deal that sent Ducati motoring over to Audi’s ownership is still not quite dry yet, and AMG, Mercedes-Benz’s performance group, has officially ended its “marketing relationship” with Ducati.

Ducati and Benz officially announced the shared marketing deal back at the 2010 LA Auto Show, but AMG just couldn’t keep the deal moving now that Audi, a direct competitor, owns the brand. First off is the awkward timing of the announcement, as the Diavel AMG – a Ducati and AMG collaboration bike – just hit showrooms. Audi hasn’t made an announcement regarding the AMG collaboration bike, but it’s likely to remain until all of the units are sold.

Honestly though, this looks almost like AMG is dropping the shared marketing plan out of spite by saying “The company takeover by a rival car manufacturer has understandably resulted in the end of any further collaboration.” Maybe we’re reading too much into it, but this is reminiscent of a teenage argument over whom is whose best friend and you can be friends with her because I don’t like her.

Honestly, with all of the mergers and collaborations that go on in the automotive and motorcycle realm, why would AMG really car if its rival car manufacturer bought a bike manufacturer that it shares advertising with. There has to be a little more to the story that will surely come out at some point.

Those of you who follow the automotive industry already know that AMG and Ducati are not at their first partnership. And when things go in the right direction you should always expect to see more than just one thing coming from a collaboration. TheDucati Diavel AMG Special Edition is the latest, but of course not the last, development from Ducati and Mercedes AMG.

This special edition is based on the Diavel Carbon and features AMG’s signature 5-spoke wheel styling, carbon fibre lateral radiator grills with aluminium trim, AMG-style sport exhaust system with engraved end-caps and AMG-style horizontally ribbed seat upholstered in Alcantara.

The model comes painted in matte black carbon fiber bodywork with AMG’s very own “Diamond White Bright” stripe and frame color contrasted with black wheels.

Also, every engine has its Desmodromic cam-timing set by hand and authenticated with the name of the engine technician engraved on the left-side engine casing.

The model will make its world debut at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show and will be available in early 2012.

The year 2010 is going to be remembered for the year when motorcycle brands from all ends of the world all went out and released new bikes. While a lot of these releases caught our attention, we have the unenviable task of having to choose one to name our official 2010 Bike of the Year.

Thankfully, the EICMA International Motorcycle Show in Milan happened last November, making our choice a little bit easier because that’s when Ducati officially unveiled their new Diavel superbike.

Taking it’s name from the Bolognese word for “devil”, the Diavel is Ducati’s crown jewel in 2010, a superbike that boasts a sleek and aggressive design with performance numbers that would make its Italian heritage proud.

The Diavel is powered by a Ducati Testastretta 11° - an engine that was born developed directly from the brands incredibly powerful, world-beating race engines of the Ducati Corse. With the Testastretta 11°, the Diavel produces a staggering 162 horsepower and an equally impressive 94 lb/ft of torque. The Diavel also comes with a revised intake and exhaust ports that are combined with radical adjustments done on the cam timing, allowing the bike to achieve torque curve levels at low rpm, allowing for the bike to remain sturdy as can be even through a wider rev-range.

The Diavel also boasts of Ducati’s Ride-by-Wire system that manages the torque levels the bike is subjected to, further improving the bike’s ridability while also keeping tabs on the Diavel’s power output, ensuring that no power is wasted and plenty is left when the rider decides to high-rpm riding.

So there it is, folks. Our 2010 Bike of the Year is the Ducati Diavel. If you’re as much a motorcycle fan as we are, then you’re going to love every split-second rev you’re going to hear from this two-wheeled devil.

After unveiling the 2011 Diavel two months ago, Ducati is already offering a special edition for it: Diamond Black. As the name suggests, this edition Ducati replaces the originally presented pearl white with a brand new diamond black with black frame. The new scheme will be further enhanced with black anodized headlamp body and lateral air intakes. It will be available starting February next year.

The new Diavel is powered by a Ducati Testastretta 11° engine - developed directly from the incredibly powerful, world-beating race engines of Ducati Corse. With its 162hp and colossal 94lb-ft (127.5Nm) of torque, the Diavel Testastretta 11° engine is all about authentic Ducati Desmodromic performance. The revised intake and exhaust ports combined with radical adjustment of the cam timing have enabled Ducati to achieve a fantastic torque curve at low rpm, which remains strong through a wider rev-range.

After months of speculation and spy photography the long wait is almost over, the Diavel will make its first public appearance at the EICMA International Motorcycle Show in Milan 2-7 November.

The name “Diavel” was inspired by the Bolognese dialect word for “devil”: One day, early in the development process of the bike, the first prototype was assembled and wheeled out in front of a group of Ducati engineers and technicians who were viewing the complete motorcycle for the first time. One person looking from the rear of the bike saw its silhouette and exclaimed in Bolognese dialect: “Ignurànt comm’ al Diavel!” Which means: “Evil, just like the devil!”

The new Diavel is powered by a Ducati Testastretta 11° engine - developed directly from the incredibly powerful, world-beating race engines of Ducati Corse. The increase in bottom-end torque is managed by Ducati’s Ride-by-Wire (RbW) system to considerably enhance the Diavel’s effortless ridability, while ensuring plenty of power remains on tap for high-rpm riding.

The Diavel is available in two versions: Diavel priced at $16,995 and Diavel Carbon priced at $19,990 and enriched with lightweight composites and milled aluminium components that meld the two worlds of sport and style with features that are both visually beautiful and functionally high-performance.
