A bit unusual in rally-raid, but the competitors in the Central Europe Rally had to tackle exactly the same special as yesterday. Cyril Despres was inimitable and won the stage almost 2 minutes ahead of Jaroslav Katrinak who was second fastest.

David Casteu lost only 11 seconds and will start the last special on Saturday in a comfortable lead of 4 minutes in front of Francisco Lopez.

Cyril Despres: “As I wasn’t the first to start, I was less worried to find another competitor coming from the opposite direction. So I was able to open the throttle a bit more compared to yesterday, riding at a speed I was comfortable with. It was really good fun, although I consider it more as a training and a good test for the bike , as the competition is over for me. I’m satisfied with the new rally light, all new components which KTM developed worked perfect this week.”

David Casteu (5th in the stage) is getting closer and closer to his first victory in rally-raid. He was relieved to finish the day only loosing 11 seconds. “I was nervous when I woke up this morning. My mechanic Sebastien told me to just go out there and have fun, and to ride as I always do. That’s exactly what I did, and it all worked out fine. In the first special I heard a strange sound when I went through a corner. I stopped to have a quick look and found out 3 spokes were broken. I solved the problem and continued. The second special was very nice. Fast, and a bit easier than yesterday thanks to the cars, which went over it after us. Only one more special to go, I’m confident for tomorrow. ”

Francisco Lopez (4th in the stage) “I’m very happy with my results so far, so I just want to make sure I make no mistakes and get to the finish. The grip was better compared to yesterday, and the stage was very enjoyable.”

Jordi Viladoms (9th in the stage) ”I rode alone the first special. Unless Pellicier (who’s 5th overall) makes a mistake, I won’t be able to catch him anymore to make it into the top five. The second stage was very nice, I tried to push a little. Now it’s a matter of staying focused to the end.”

Tomorrow the 7th and final stage. Veszprem- Veszprem in reversed direction, with a length of 157 km. After the special the riders will regroup in Veszprem before going to the podium in Balatonfüred.

Making a great come back like Cyril Despres did is truly amazing. I though he doesn’t have the guts to win, but I was wrong.
