When you look at a 999 Superbike you feel the need of speeding even if the motorcycle is parked in your garage, well if you are lucky enough to be one of the owners of this beauty, as the 999 is a very limited edition. The 999 satisfies the needs of even one of the most demanding buyers in this world: it has style, it has power, but in the same time is easy to maintain on the road and offers one of the best performance in the world. But the 999 does not only offer speed and performance, it also has a stunning design that makes it one of the most beautiful motorcycles in the world.

The 999 was named by the press the best twin cylinder engine ever produced. It provides to its riders the power they need to win on tracks around the world, but also making every one turn they had when they drive around in a 999. The innovative and cool design immediately draws attention to this dynamic machine.

Ducati intended to create a Superbike of stunning design that improves rider ergonomics, makes maintenance easier, reduces complexity of the motorcycle and offers performance second to none. The aerodynamics, mechanical and electronic components, chassis and running gear were developed first and styling followed.

The debut of the twin-cylinder motorcycles was made in 1988, when Marco Lucchinelli was riding a Ducati 851 at the World Superbike Championship. It had an output of 128 hp at 11500 rpm. The 851 evolved to the 888, 916, 996, and 998, the last one with an output of 188 hp.

Compared to its predecessors, the 999 contains hundreds of improvements and innovative technological solutions, and represents a true generational leap forward.

Powered by a Testastretta Desmodromic engine, with an output of 140 hp at 9750 rpm, the 999 represents the pure sports bike: purposefully long, low, and narrow, with the ability to cheat the wind at speed. Its beauty is conveyed through the simplicity of its shape and exciting well-executed details. Ducati didn’t create just a bike, they adapt it to the needs of every rider: each rider is able to establish a perfect symbiosis with the machine.

As a result of its performance and dynamics, the 999 dominated its its rivals in the World Superbike Competition, capturing both the Manufacturer's and Rider's titles, starting the very first year of competition.

Chassis

Among the most appealing elements on the machine, the box-section swingarm combined with the tubular trellis frame is one of the key features of the 999 chassis because it combines ultra lightweight with remarkable resistance to twisting and flex. Consequently, road handling is extremely precise in all riding conditions, which cover a very wide range of situations for the 999, from the racetrack to the motorway, or winding mountain roads, with a solo rider or with a passenger.

The "standard" 999 features numerous ergonomic solutions, which are also found on the more sports-oriented versions. This machine features adjustments to alter the distance of levers from the handlebars, footrests with five position adjustments and a variable rake steering head, complete with a steering damper equipped with eccentric attachment system to adapt rapidly to fork angle adjustments.

The sophisticated chassis of the 999 is completed by Showa suspension front and rear, with full adjustment for preload and hydraulic damping. The front fork even includes TiN slider coating for racing performance and superb handling.

The Rear Suspension

The 999’s rear suspension is fitted with a shock that is adjustable for rebound damping, compression damping, and spring preload. The 999 comes standard with a Showa shock and the 999 S version is equipped with an Ohlins shock.

The Brakes

The front brake and clutch master cylinders were co-designed with Brembo to allow for increased steering lock angle and a lower front fairing. The clutch lever, the front brake, and the rear brake levers are all fully adjustable. The Brembo braking system consists of twin 320 mm steel front brake discs and a steel 240 mm diameter rear brake disk. The front discs are spaced farther outboard from the front wheel to improve the cooling efficiency of airflow. The thickness of the brake discs was reduced from 5 mm to 4.5 mm, and an increase of the inner diameter of the discs reduces unsprung weight and improves handling.

Engine

The 140 hp at 9,750 rpm produced from twin-cylinder engine, is the most power ever to appear in the legendary Ducati trellis frame. The large bore (104 mm) enables high revs as well as the use of larger-diameter valves to let the engine breathe freely. The main differences with respect to the other 999 models is found in the top end of the powerhouse where more extreme cam-timing guarantees top-notch performance, while the oversized titanium valves with reduced diameter stems work on bronze seats to ensure greater reliability.

The 999R also has titanium valve collets, 12-hole racing injectors, magnesium head covers, carbon covers for the timing belts with a built-in ventilation system and carbon heat shield for the silencer. Everything has been designed as if this were an actual racing bike to offer exceptionally low weight and high performance without compromising reliability.

The L-twin Testastretta engines are very compact, making the finished motorcycles incredibly narrow and agile, much like their racing cousins. They also offer excellent torque and remarkably vigorous power delivery compared to four-cylinder engines. Ducati Superbikes have incredible acceleration and provide outstanding riding thrills.

The Testastretta engine in the 999 has a piston stroke of 63.5 millimeter and a bore of 100 millimeter; the reduced stroke limits maximum piston speed allowing increased rpm's and improved overall reliability. An exclusive oil pump feeding system, built into the Corse low sump crankcase ensures maximum oil flow even during extreme cornering and hard acceleration out of corners.

First impressions

A bike that makes the 0 to 60 mph sprint in an eye blink and the quarter-mile in the 10-second range, makes every supercar around the world tremble. And compared with a price of a supercar (take any Ferrari or Lamborghini for example), the 999 has an affordable price (less than $18.000). But you will say: “I don’t have enough driving pleasure in a motorcycle”. Maybe you’re right, but a car you only drive it, and a motorcycle you feel it, you are much more involved while riding it.

Powered by a Testastretta engine with an output of 140 hp at 9750 rpm, the 999 reaches a top speed of 160 mph.

“The dynamic response of the Ducati 999 reflects the tradition of the Bolognese motorcycling manufacturer in the field of sports motorcycles, and moreover improves some of the features that have won the fame of our Superbikes over the decades. First of all, the directional stability is at peak levels, giving the rider the reassurance of solid, safe steering, even in the most critical sport riding conditions on the track or road. On uneven stretches taken at top speed, around curves on the track or highway at full momentum and down hills at maximum throttle, the front of the bike obeys with exemplary precision the direction decided by the rider. This without triggering steering oscillations, an undesirable side effect of the “extreme” chassis of many late generation sport bikes selected for maximum agility, even to the detriment of stability.”
