The KTM 990 SM R is a stunning motorcycle which rewards you with a thrilling ride every time you jump on its saddle. At the heart of the bike lies a water-cooled V-engine with 85 kW (114 hp) on tap. The engine is among the lightest units in its class and cranks out an impressive amount of torque. A modern electronic Keihin engine management system regulates the modern fuel injection system to improve the behavior under partial load.
But power without control is useless, thereby the KTM 990 is also able to deal great with twisty roads thanks to its multi-adjustable high-spec WP suspension. The sporty mix also contains a set of front twin-disc brakes with radially mounted four-piston brake calipers and rear single-disc brakes with two-piston brake calipers. For increased performances the disc brakes are combined with an ABS (antilock brake system).

A state-of-the-art V2 engine with electronic injection and impressive punch, a perfectly balanced chassis, a complete package of high-quality components: the 990 SM R is the most radical twin-cylinder Supermoto on the market. – and also one of the safest thanks to the superb Bosch 9M+‑ABS. All the more astounding that it is just as much fun in the urban jungle as it is ticking off passes and out on the racetrack. One of the most dynamic, yet at the same time versatile machines, not only in the Supermoto segment.
The KTM 990 SM R’s fuel tank in conjunction with the elongated seat provide the rider with excellent contact points and maximum freedom of movement for hitting the gas with commitment. The tapered, ideally angled aluminium handlebar aids perfect vehicle control.
SHOCK COMPONENTS AND POWDER-COATED FRAME
The recipe for the KTM 990 SM R is based not least on the very finest ingredients, which also delight the eye of the beholder. Take, for example, the powder-coated frame, radial Brembo® brake callipers or the high-quality suspension components from WP Suspension.
The 990 SM R’s water-cooled V-engine with 85 kW (114 hp) sets the benchmark for free-revving twins. Its intelligent design principle with multi-function balancer shaft makes it one of the lightest and most compact V2s in its class. The engine impresses with explosive, spontaneous throttle response.
Alongside the optimum combustion chamber design, the major factors behind the outstanding performance of the 990 SM R’s V-twin with 75° cylinder angle are the state-of-the-art four-valve cylinder heads, each with flow-optimised ducts and two overhead camshafts.
CRANK DRIVE / PISTONS
Particularly lightweight pistons and connecting rods bestow the 2013 990 SM R’s V2 engine with reduced reciprocated weight and hence with decidedly spontaneous responsiveness, underlining its extremely sporty engine characteristics.
The electronic Keihin engine management system regulates the modern fuel injection system on the 990 SM R, focussing on optimum behaviour under partial load and spontaneous responsiveness. In this way, KTM engineers were able to harmonise raw power with optimum rideability.
FRAME AND SWINGARM
The KTM 990 SM R’s tubular space frame made from thin-walled chrome-molybdenum steel tubing with a bolted-on, light alloy subframe only weighs 9.5 kg, yet it impresses with exemplary torsional stiffness. The 575 mm swingarm with conical profiles contributes plenty of mechanical grip.
Thanks to multiple setting options, the upside-down telescopic fork and the directly connected shock absorber from WP Suspension allow optimum individual adjustment of the chassis to suit riding style, track and load.
More than adequate deceleration is ensured on the 990 SM R by Brembo® brakes with the very finest components. At the front wheel, two radially-mounted four-piston brake callipers bite hard into floating 305 mm discs at the command of the radial master cylinder. So that braking works perfectly even in difficult conditions, a Bosch 9M+‑ABS intervenes in borderline cases to prevent the front wheel from blocking or an unintentional endo. But don’t worry, you only notice the ABS when things get really too hot to handle. Until then, you can control your deceleration with customary, racing precision.
The disconnectable dual-circuit ABS system developed in cooperation with Bosch offers excellent protection against over-braking, while maintaining the full effect and perfect feedback of a genuine sports brake thanks to very fine sensors. Weighing no more than one kilogramme, the ABS system therefore allows extremely sporty braking. And sets standards in the prevention of unintentional endos.
