It's as if the talented team of engineers responsible for the GSX-R750 designed a racebike with street equipment like lights, instruments and a horn and mirrors. Which makes it more obvious what the 2008 GSX-R750 really is.

Not just a true race replica. The original race replica, reborn.

SUZUKI GSX-R750 MODEL TIMELINE

The GSX-R750 entered the market in March 1985. There's not many bikes out there in mint condition, most of them are ridden very hard and seen their best days. Nevertheless the evolution of modern sports bikes started with the GSX-R750.

1985 Suzuki year code: F

With the 1983 RG250 Gamma, Suzuki was the first factory to deliver a true racer replica using race-bred technology to the public. The next step was to build a 4-stroke 400cc machine for the Japanese home market and a year later a 750cc machine, culmination to the Suzuki's racing experiences in the World Endurance, AMA Superbike and Championship. The GSX-R750 was first presented at the 1984 IFMA Cologne Show in West Germany. Although it was fully street legal, it was clear that it was built even to compete in the various Worldwide Championships.

The GSX-R750F entered the market in March 1985. It was considered as the first production motorcycle to offer race-bred technology and performance at an affordable price. The design philosophy centered mainly on weight reduction. Suzuki went counter to the conventional design by developing SACS (Suzuki advanced cooling system) whereby the cylinder head and the pistons are oil cooled via the engine oil injection, achieving cooling efficiency as good as water-cooling without its weight increase. The computer designed engine package was 10% lighter than the water-cooled versions.

The GSX-R750 also featured the new TSCC (twin swirl combustion chamber) cylinder head, DAIS (direct air intake system , flat side carburetors, six-speed gearbox and hydraulic clutch engaged the power. The chassis featured the finest multi-rib extrusion molded aluminum box section piping and cold-cast aluminum alloy components, MR-ALBOX frame, that weighted 8,1 kg less than half of the conventional steel frames. These and other weight reduction measures gave the bike sensationally low dry weight of 179 kg, 20% lower than the competing 750s, resulting a superior power-to-weight ratio for much easier power control and quicker handling. Completing the GSX-R750 design was the endurance racer theme: dual headlights on the aerodynamics full fairing and 18-inch tyres both front and rear.

1986 Suzuki year code: G

Trying to make the bike less nervous, the standard 1986 model received 25 mm longer swing arm and standard radial tyres like the previous limited version GSX-R750R (Racing) model. Part from that, the model remained basically unchanged from 1985 except for a modified lower fairing. The distinct dual headlights were upgraded to 65/50 watts.

The street-legal limited version GSX-R750R model was introduced for 1986. The basic specifications of the bike were the same as for the standard model (except for the seat height) but the the ”double R” model offered some interesting goodies that improved an already great bike. The gun-coat engine finish, gold-plated chain, blue-coated wheels and two sets of racing numbers is not all. The 1986 GSX-R750R offered even a new electrically activated front suspension system (NEAS), 310 mm floating front brake discs, steering damper, racing type adjustable clutch-lever, dry clutch, single racing seat, remote rear damper reservoir, amber halogen head lights and more.

1987 Suzuki year code: H

The production model gained the previous years limited GSX-R750R's exclusive features; stronger 41 mm diameter lightweight front forks with  improved PDF (positive damping front fork) adjustability and the brake lever actuated electronic NEAS, stabilized with a steering damper. Biggest failing of these early F/G/H models was the steel-bodied rear shock which quickly overheated and faded. Larger (21 liter) fuel tank.

1988 Suzuki year code: J

The styling went smooth and curvaceous with this model with almost everything being new - 73.0 x 44.7mm short-stroke motor, thinner piston rings, bigger main bearings, bigger valves, new high-lift camshaft, 36 mm contant-velocity semi-flatslide carbs and up rated suspension, wheels and tyres.  All this produced 112 hp at 11,000 rpm to propel a dry weight of 195 kg. Unfortunately, it lost significant ground clearance (via the exhaust) and the adoption of 17" wheels which offered only a slim margin of error.

1989 Suzuki year code: K

Ground clearance was improved with the GSX-R750K and overall it was a little more developed but otherwise, much the same.  The 4-into-2 exhaust pipe introduced a year earlier received stylish stainless steel covering over the mufflers. Gear ratio revisions in 3rd, 4th and 5th gears enabled improved power control and secondary gear ratio was lowered, together with 5mm increase in the wheelbase, all combining for better sports riding on highways. The brake master cylinder controlled the 4 piston brake calipers featured four-way adjustability.

1990 Suzuki year code: L

The GSX-R750L was possibly the best of the oil-cooled models.  Big changes included inverted forks and, importantly, a return to the long-stroke motor (the short-stroke wasn't so good in race-trim but was OK for the road).  Other modifications included a 4-1 exhaust, steering damper, 38 mm carbs (up 2 mm on the standard K yet 2 mm smaller than the RK), smaller valves, new conrods, lighter pistons, large capacity oil pump, larger curved oil cooler and the rear rim became the 'standard' 17" x 5.5" item.  Power was up to 115 hp at 11,000 rpm while weight was down to 193 kg.

1991 Suzuki year code: M

The 1991-year's GSX-R750M weighed 15 kg more than the previous model! Some Suzuki sales brochures didn't even bother to quote a weight figure.  The weight factor alone sends this bike to the back of the GSX-R pack.  New aerodynamic fairing with slanted nose to reduce frontal drag, with distinctive headlight cover and running lights. The seat was enlarged and twin tail lamp design graced the backend. The oil-cooled SACS engine received internal refinement of adopting one rocker arm per valve from the previous of one per two valves, stronger valve springs and an exhaust cam with 7 degrees less duration to give 116 hp.

1992 Suzuki year code: N

New liquid-cooled engine debuted for the 1992-year's GSX-R750WN (W meant Water-cooling) to match and reduce the increasing heat under severe racing conditions. However, the invaluable seven years of oil-cooling experience was not abandoned completely and the new engine featured the best of both worlds: oil injection piston cooling and water-cooled oil-cooler were among the features incorporated into the new engine to achieve compactness and reliability, enabling cylinder pitch reduction by 10mm and crankcase width by 57mm.

1993 Suzuki year code: P

The second year or the water-cooled engine, the 1993-year's GSX-R750WP received mostly cosmetic changes. The liquid-cooled DOHC 4 valve engine was designed to lower the center of gravity by positioning the crankshaft low. The valve angle was set at 16 degrees, 4 degrees less than that of the final air-cooled SACS engine Thinner valve stems and Direct-action valve train also contributed to make this engine a compact unit excelling at high rpm, achieving high compression ratio of 11.8, the highest in this class. SCAI (Suzuki Condensed Air Intake) system allowed optimal intake of fresh air to the engine under all conditions.

1994 Suzuki year code: R

A full engine, gearbox and chassis redesign came with the GSX-R750WR including improved engine internals, revised gears and forks, stainless steel header pipes and six-piston brakes.   Weight was down to 199 kg - a point where the 130 hp GSX-R1100 was some 8 years earlier!  In another odd move, power was down to 112 hp at 10,500 rpm. 6 piston brake calipers and ultawide 180/55ZR17 rear tyre graced the R that weighed in 9 kg dry lighter than the 1993 production model. The same 1994 model continued to be available in 1995.

1995 Suzuki year code: S

In the fifth year since the introduction of the water-cooled engine, the 1995 model featured cosmetic changes such as the silver colouring treatment on the outer of the inverted tube front fork (from blue of 1994 model) and new overall colouring schemes. The standard model did not lack in performance, as it continued with main features introduced with the 1994 model: the lightweight and rigid aluminium frame with thin-walled 43 mm inverted inner tube fork: engine cover parts of magnesium; aluminum water pump; 6-piston front brake calipers; the swing arm featuring aluminum box section sub frame, etc. The 1995 model was also the last GSX-R750 to feature the traditional aluminium double-cradle frame.

1996 Suzuki year code: T

The Revelation! Suzuki listened to its customers and brought the GSX-R750 back to where it should have been. With a new chassis, new engine, 39 mm carbs and new shape it importantly was down 20 kg to 179 kg with 128 hp and pin-sharp handling.

The GSX-R750T was again targeted for the Superbike crown using technologies derived straight from the 500cc GP racer. It even looked like the RGV500 works machine Kevin Schwantz rode in the World Championships the year before.

1997 Suzuki year code: V

More of the same with only slight mods and a few internal changes for the GSX-R750V. The aerodynamics of the slanted nose overhanging over the front tyre and the rounded contours of the large detachable single seat tail cowl were borrowed straight from the RGV-T. The large seat cowl also has the distinction of making any followers' slipstreaming difficult in races. High power, high reliability and the compact and lightweight features of the engine and the chassis enabled the riders on the GSX-R750 to shine on the track and the street riders to enjoy handling ease of a 400cc class chassis but with explosive acceleration. New graphics.

1998 Suzuki year code: W

Electronic fuel injection appeared for the first time on a GSX-R with large 46 mm throttle bodies together with a steering damper as standard, a five mm shorter wheelbase, altered internal and external gear ratios, altered chassis, suspension and brakes, internal engine mods and massive airbox.   Power was up to 135 hp.  An absolute gem to ride.  Suzuki made a class-leading sportsbike even better.

Two-stage system monitored water and intake air temperatures, environmental and intake air pressures, throttle position and engine rpm to optimal air/fuel mix for both low and high rpm situations. CDI ignition coil was adopted and internal engine parts saw further weight reduction and the camshaft position use of close ratio gearbox and strengthening of rear shock mount.

1999 Suzuki year code: X

The 1999-year's GSX-R750X saw only minor modifications including a wider 6" rear rim and new graphics.

2000 Suzuki year code: Y

The second revelation! Everything was new on the 2000-year's GSX-R750Y (16th model version).  The engine and the chassis have been totally redesigned. The bodywork was more aerodynamic, 30 mm lower in overall height, longer swingarm, longer wheelbase, 4-piston brakes (rather than the 6-piston of before), smaller rear rim (back to  5.5"), shorter and narrower engine with redesigned fuel-injection and a huge 13 kg lighter (166 kg).

The engine features 12 degree intake valves and 13 degree exhaust valves, both one degree narrower for even more compact combustion area, enabling remarkably high 12.0 compression ratio. The cylinder head front to back length is reduced 7,5 mm and the head cover is lightweight magnesium. Cylinders are one piece with the upper crankcase for both strength and weight reduction. And the crankcase continues with the distinct three-piece design. All these contribute to an engine 15 mm shorter in length and 8 mm narrower in width and 5 kg lighter, achieving the goal of compact lightweight design. Feeding optimal fuel to the engine is the new electronic fuel injection system with double valve rider controlled throttle valve and the electronically controlled valve: increasing torque and power as well as increasing combustion efficiency  that contributes to cleaner exhaust emission as well. The new mainframe is further lightened and the swing arm has been lengthened 20 mm while the wheelbase is kept at 1400 mm for better handling and traction control.

2001 Suzuki year code: K1

Maximum leaning angle: 54.5 degrees. The 43mm inverted fork and the46mm-piston rear shock are both fully adjustable. 320mm-disc front brakes with lightweight 4-piston calipers: 220mm-disc rear brake with a twin-opposed-piston caliper.

Lightweight 17-inch wheels carry high-performance radial tires developed specifically for the GSX-R750. The fairing and bodywork (including the standard-equipment solo seat cover), fitting tightly around the compact chassis and engine. keep the frontal area small white maximizing rider wind protection and the effectiveness of the ramair system. Functional electrical equipment includes a lightweight and compact dual-beam headlamp assembly lightweight step-motor-driven analogue tachometer and digital LCD speedometer.

2002 Suzuki year code: K2

The 2002-year's GSX-R750K2 saw only minor modifications including a 10mm increase in the wheelbase and an increase of torque from 61 lbs/ft to 63 lbs/ft.
