Boulevard S40’s design is very attractive and influenced by larger Boulevard models. In fact, this model looks like an S83 in miniature only that with a single cylinder engine.

It has custom flat handlebars which provide it with a clean, sporty appearance and combined with the low seat height making it appropriate for shorter riders or beginners, the Boulevard S40 has all it takes to accomodate its rider in the best riding position.

The fuel reservoir has a tear drop-shape and it features flush-mounted speedometer. The gasoline in that very same fuel tank feeds the engine and the energy results into two beautiful spinning polished standard spoke wheels just like on bigger cruiser models.

Good looks are given by the black engine case and cylinder with polished cylinder head fins for a finished appearance, and also by the zinc-plated cylinder mounting bolts providing it with high quality finish in corrosion resistant and blends with the black engine color for a more detailed appearance.

As you could already notice, it is all about the finishing touches and the fork brackets could make no escape. These are polished and now feature an attractive and durable clear coat finish which goes very well with the custom-style rear view mirrors similar to larger Boulevard models.

If there was any doubt that Suzuki practically dedicates the Boulevard S40 to female riders, the 2009 Red (almost pink, if you ask me)/White color scheme will vanish it. Apart from that, there are other two paintjobs available, a White/Silver and a simple Black one.

Overall, the appearance is excellent and the turning of heads will be guaranteed as you admire yourself and the bike in the shop’s windows.

Test Ride

2009 Suzuki Boulevard S40

Once on the large displacement single cylinder-powered cruiser which is relatively simple, narrow, light and tractable compared to multi cylinder engines of the same size, I expected to encounter a vibrating bodywork and an engine with little power capabilities for its cylinder capacity. The truth is that power was at the level that I expected it to be and that is satisfying but what amazed me was the fact that the counterbalancer does its job spotless and although it doesn’t eliminate vibrations, it reduces them to a more than decent level.

Although it feels a bit out of breath at 65mph, the S40 doesn’t shake with anything like the ferocity of an unbalanced 650cc single. My advise is to buy this motorcycle if don’t plan on putting too much highway miles and if you are not a speed enthusiast because you will be a bit disappointed in both situations. The powerband is broad though and you don’t need to make much of an effort to keep the rpm up to top around town. Although it won’t accelerate as powerful as the rest of the 650cc motorcycles, the S40 will still provide you with the necessary pull that converts it into a decent machine to ride around town.

Being low, lightweight, and short between the axels, the Boulevard S40’s handling is very responsively. It is low enough to allow you to put both of your feet on the ground if you are a short person and its steering is quick and precise, as you would expect from a Suzuki. Another plus is the fact that the motorcycle is acceptably steady at all speeds and allows to be leaned respectable, especially by cruiser standards.

The bike had to have a disadvantage and it can be found at the suspension system which is lightly sprung and damped resulting in surges on bumpy roads.

Anything else but heavy, this cruiser was provided with a modest braking system composed from a single hydraulic front disc and a rear drum. It is more than enough to stop the bike and to ride in complete safety at the reach of your fingers and toes.

Created to fill the gap between 250cc and big cruiser, the Boulevard S40 does its job properly and makes sure that its riders won’t exaggerate with the speedometer’s needle and it promises not to exaggerate with fuel consumption as the average is around 60 mpg.

Conclusion

Dreaming to become a Hell’s Angel but you don’t have the skills or the bike? Try to work your way up and the Suzuki Boulevard S40 will help you make the first and very important step to reaching your goals. But if you don’t aim that high and you’re only looking for a great commuting solution in town, the Suzuki can also be the alternative and the solution to your necessities. It depends on how you see things and how far do you want to extend this side of yours.
