Like any Ural model, the 2013 Gear-Up is a tough motorcycle designed to deal effortless with anything throw at it. Perhaps it goes without saying that it comes with an on-demand sidecar drive which makes it one of the most practical motorcycles from the streets.

The Ural Gear-Up is powered by a strong OHV, air-cooled, 4 stroke, opposed twin cylinder engine which develops a maximum output of 40 hp at 5600 rpm and 38 ft-lbs at 4600 rpm. The engine is fed by a 5.0 gallons fuel tank and scores a fuel consumption of 26-33 mpg.

It is also worthy of being mentioned that the motorcycle comes with a Brembo full floating disc up front and Sachs suspension.

The 2013 Ural Gear-Up has a starting price of $14,099 and is available in Forest Fog, Gobi Desert Camo, or Forest Camo.

Overview

Want to stand out in a crowd, and be able to disappear in the woods or desert? Try the 2WD 2013 Ural Gear-Up. Just like its cousin, the 2013 Ural Patrol—with its on-demand sidecar drive—Gear-Up's origins trace back to the military past of the Ural motorcycle family. The 2013 Ural Gear-Up combination is as tough as a Russian AK-47!

Despite its clearly military upbringing, the Gear-Up is equally fit for more peaceful missions, such as fishing or hunting trips. If outdoor adventures are not your forte, you can still amaze your friends with the motorcycle's ability to blaze over outdoor obstacles or urban challenges. Did we mention its irresistible camo paint schemes?

The 2013 Ural Gear-Up is available in Forest Fog, Gobi Desert Camo, or Forest Camo.

Boxer

Reliable, stout, and proven, the boxer layout could be the last engine you ever ride. Air cooled, and elegant, this motor is the heart of every Ural we build.

Powdercoated Finish

Tough, uniform, and incredibly sharp, some 2013 models received powdercoated—not painted—finishes.

Brembo & Sachs

Stop with ease—Brembo full floating disc on the front—and know the terrain—Sachs suspension.

Verdict

It is true that a sidecar isn’t the dream motorcycle of many riders, but this Russian machine has many secret cards hidden in its sleeves that could impress even the most experienced off road riders.

Leaving behind the 1940s styling which is a “love it or hate it” type debate, the motorcycle has a lot of no-nonsense technologies fitted under its skin. For the starters it comes with a useful lever that engages two-wheel drive for traversing difficult terrain.

Then there is, of course, the side car configuration which makes the Gear-Up the most spacious and practical bike ever seen on the market. You also get top spec components such as Brembo brakes and Sachs suspensions.

On the other hand, the Ural is heavy and slow with handling and its 62 mph top speed won’t win you any speed contests.

Reviewers say that it’s not always wishing to start, occasionally backfiring and only grudgingly shifting into reverse gear. These are not huge problems for such a bike, but some may like them and learn to adapt, while other may very easy hate them.

In the end however, the Ural remains what has always been – a tough motorcycle designed for tough people and tough times. It comes with an affordable price, is easy to repair and is also reliable to the core.
