Design

Built and designed to be an all-purpose utility bike, the Yamaha TW200 is all about ensuring the rider the time of his life. A lightweight, diamond-type, high-tensile steel frame serves as the TW200's chassis. To ensure a comfortable seating position for the driver, the TW200 has a long, motocross-style seat that creates a balanced riding position, ensuring ease in riding. Durable and wide fenders on the bike serve the purpose of keeping all the mud and dirt off of riders, especially when they're on an off-road trek with all the earthly elements. The frame-mounted passenger footpegs provide two-up riding capability while a powerful, 60/55-watt, halogen, enduro-style headlight provides daylight clarity at night. The accompanying small fairings greatly cuts down on wind buffeting at highway speeds and adds a styling element to the bike's overall profile. Instrumentation is also a standard for the TW200, one that includes a speedometer with odometer and resettable trip meter, and indicator lights for neutral, high beam, and turn signals.

The 2011 Yamaha TW200 is a sand king, a medium trail prince, a smooth trail baron, a rough trail pauper, and a street mangy dog. Keep all that in mind and you'll have a great time!

Engine

The Yamaha TW200 carries a 196cc, air-cooled, SOHC, 2-valve, 4-stroke single engine that produces torquey low- and mid-range power that are completely ideal for all-purpose riding, be it during off-road explorations or just the casual ride around town. The engine is then mated to a five-speed manual clutch transmission for maximum on- and off-road performance. The accompanying internal engine counter-balancer greatly reduces the vibration generated by the road to make a smooth and comfortable ride. An easy and reliable, push-button electric ignition system allows for a precise spark to keep peak engine performance while an automatic cam chain tensioner was added to substantially reduce maintenance and mechanical engine noise.

Of all the surfaces the TW200 shines in, Yamaha makes no bones about where the bike shines above all else: the deep sand. With the kind of set-up and performance capabilities it has, the TW200 can carry sand rides with absolute ease, laughing heartily at the dunes and riding on top of them with the ease of which its capable of doing on just about every other surface.

Brakes and Suspension

Part of the whole set-up is a box section swingarm that's fitted with easy-to-use eccentric chain adjusters. Grease fittings are placed at the swingarm pivot points, allowing for easy maintenance while 33mm front fork with 6.3" of wheel travel soaks up the bumps for a plush ride. The bike also comes with rubber fork boots, allowing for extended life. The bike has a Monocross link rear suspension that uses a single rear shock with the rear wheel travel of 5.9" allowing the bike to remain comfortable under all types of terrain. In the front, the bike has a 220mm front disc brake with twin piston calipers that ensure great stopping power and make the TW200 one of the most comfortable off-road bikes on the market. At the rear, you'll find an easy-to-use drum brake with wing nut style adjuster lightweight, aluminum alloy rims on the front and rear.

Pricing

The US-spec 2011 Yamaha TW200 retails for $4,350 while the Canadian-spec version is a little more expensive at $5,199 CDN.

Quotes

Motorcycle.com ---- "Iconoclasts are everywhere, and sooner or later, you’ll probably see one riding a TW200. This fat-tired wonder has been the darling of campgrounds from Bar Harbor to Pismo Beach. Few street-legal dual-purpose machines are as easy to manage in sand as the TW, yet it remains a fine, versatile streetbike as long as you don’t envision a lot of highway miles or triple-digit speeds (downhill, with a tailwind, maybe...). The built-in luggage rack is handy, the headlight shroud actually deflects some wind at speed and the TW can boast some terrific fuel mileage in everyday riding."
