Design

Yamaha spared no expense in dressing up the VMax from nose to tail.

The motorcycle features plenty of non-mechanical parts entirely upholstered in Skipper buffalo leather. The seat, the tank, the stem, the headlight cover, grips, fenders and the silencers are all leather covered. The bike also has what's called the tool pouch, which is housed under the seat and specially designed by no less than Hermes. The upscale upholstery on the bike reinforces the sculptural lines of this unique object and underlines its emotional power. To complement the extensive use of leather on the bike, Yamaha also added touches of aluminum on the wing mirrors, meters, and exhaust.

The bike's multi-function handlebar mounted meter includes a plethora of useful equipment, including an analog tachometer and digital speedo plus an adjustable shift light and a variety of warning lights. A second multi-function display panel is located on top of the "fuel tank", providing important readouts like fuel gauge, fuel consumption display, odometer, dual tripmeters, clock, coolant temp, gear indicator, throttle valve opening, intake air temp, stop watch, and fuel reserve tripmeter. This panel uses a highly visible 256 x 64 dot matrix "Organic Electro Luminescence display."

Performance

The Yamaha VMax's powertrain is nothing to sneeze about, especially if you're talking about a 1679cc liquid-cooled 65 V-4, DOHC, 4-cylinder engine that offers plenty of eye-popping acceleration that is every bit as powerful as its looks suggest. The engine comes with a downdraft four-bore fuel injection with YCC-I intake technology and YCC-T fly-by-wire throttle, providing breaknech acceleration throughout the bike's broad powerband. The Electronic Control Unit (ECU) uses three microprocessors to control fuel injection, ignition, YCC-T, YCC-I, meters and other electrical components. A 5-speed transmission features optimized gear ratios for maximum acceleration and performance. Steel valves are used for excellent durability while 34mm intake valves with a 14-degree valve angle are also included, as are 30mm exhaust valves with a 15 degree valve angle. The cams are driven by a combined chain and gear system to precisely control valves while also keeping cylinder heads remarkably compact for such a large displacement engine. Then there's the hydraulically activated clutch that includes a racetrack-proven ramp-type slipper clutch system that, allowing for smoother braking while downshifting.

Chassis and Suspension

A lightweight aluminum chassis puts the VMax's engine low and forward for mass centralization. The frame is very rigid or stiff at the head pipe, engine mounts and swingarm pivot point, resulting in a machine that's well-equipped in handling just about any road surface. An extra-long, lightweight cast aluminum swingarm provides great torsional rigidity for excellent handling and maneuverability. A detachable C.F. die cast aluminum, as well as an extruded aluminum rear sub frame, are also part of the set-up, making for easier maintenance access.

A link Monocross rear suspension also comes with the VMax, one that utilizes a fully adjustable remote reservoir rear shock with rear wheel travel measuring at 4.3." The suspension is fully-adjustable, including an 11-way spring preload adjustability, a 12-way compression damping and an 18-way rebound damping adjustability. As for the brakes, the VMax carries a Brembo master cylinders, the front with radial pump

and reserve tank. A large 320mm wave-style dual front discs are

matched to radial-mounted mono block 6-piston calipers while a 298mm wave-style disc is matched to a single-piston caliper.

Pricing

The 2011 Yamaha VMax retails for a princely sum of $19,890. It might be a little steep, but considering all the features it comes with, that price tag justifies everything that the bike comes with.
