Performance

The entire Viking Professional powertrain rates as one of the most solidly reliable in the entire snowmobile business. The four-stroke triple features a hot firing digital electronic ignition to assure positive starts and consistent fuel burning. The intake relies on a threesome of venerable 40mm carburetors, which adds to the sled’s reliable performance. This entire system of engine and tranny has been well tested on snow-packed job sites for a long time. It is virtually bulletproof and exactly what serious snow workers want.

Sitting high and wide over the RS Viking’s ProAction Plus suspension and 156-inches of track is a cargo-holding seat. Flip up the seat to access voluminous underseat storage for ropes, tools, hand winch or just a quick snack. The rear passenger portion of the RS Viking seat detaches to make more room for stowage in the rear rack area.

Engine

Because the RS Viking Professional was designed for utility, it comes with the most proficient Yamaha 4-stroke. The Genesis 120 was designed to be a snowmobile motor with broad torque and strong efficiencies with fuel and emissions. The older fan-cooled VK 540 enjoyed strong torque as well, but being a 2-stroke, its power tended to drop off after it reached midrange. The RS Viking 4-stroke triple continues to pull strongly up to a peak of about 8,200 revs, making it an excellent replacement for the VK 540. While the liquid-cooled triple has a relatively high 11.3 to one compression ratio, it works just fine on regular 87-octane gasoline.

Suspension

The power gets fed to a huge snow paw that slaps 20-inches of width to the snow. The overall track length stretches 13-feet (156-inches) around a specially designed parallel rail slide suspension that features an articulated rear section. The ProAction Plus suspension gets great grip from the modified Camoplast RipSaw track and its 1.25-inch lug profile. But it also flexes thanks to the articulating action of the rear suspension, which minimizes the sled’s trenching action when reversing in deep snow. This is a very good feature when you consider that this over-sized workhorse is the heaviest sled in Yamaha’s 2012 model line.
