After a dramatic hour of qualification session, Felipe Massa obtained the pole position at Magny-Cours.Ferrari’s driver recorded the best lap of 1:15.034 overtaking Lewis Hamilton and his team-mate Kimi Raikkonen.
Hamilton’s final run of the session made him improve his time but this wasn’t enough to obtain the pole position ahead of Massa.
Kimi Raikkonen has been right on the pace all weekend long but was two-tenth off in qualifying indicating that he may be carrying a little more fuel. Raikkonen will start on the 3rd place ahead of Robert Kubica who came back in action after missing the US Grand Prix two weeks ago, after his terrible collision
A suspected gearblox problem ruined Fernando Alonso’s qualifying session, who obtained only the 10th position.
A big surprise came from Renault. Giancarlo Fisichella and Heikki Kovalainen obtained 5th and 6th positions which is not a bad thing for the French automaker.Nick Heidfeld has been suffering with back pain in his BMW Sauber but did a good job to qualify the second monopost in 7th position.
Jarno Trulli made it into the final phase of qualifying and starts eighth in his Toyota.His team-mate Ralf Schumacher failed to make it into the final session and receiving engine penalties.This sent him on the 11th place.
Nico Rosberg will start on the 9th place in his Williams monopost after a very good run. Team-mate Alex Wurz was not so lucky and he will start o the 18th position
Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello qualified Honda on the 12th and 13th positions.They are still chasing Honda’s first points of the season.
Red Bull Renault it was a bit of a disaster with David Coulthard suffering another gearbox problem at the start of Q2 while Mark Webber was just on the 14th place.
Tonio Liuzzi will be disappointed not to make it through the first round of qualifying and starts 17th ahead of Alex Wurz. Takuma Sato and Anthony Davidson proved closely matched for Super Aguri Honda with the 19th and 20th fastest times. Sato will however start 22nd and last courtesy of his penalty from the US Grand Prix.
It was a bad session for the Spyker team. Christijan Albers will start on 20th position while his team-mate Adrian Sutil will be behind him behind
