Recently, Volvo said that its Mean Green hybrid truck will attempt to break its own world speed record achieved in 2011. The company has announced that it had succeeded in its attempt and the new world speed record was achieved on April 27 at the Wendover Airfield.

Boije Ovebrink, Mean Green driver and owner said “We are very pleased with Mean Green’s performance, especially at such a high altitude. We knew Wendover would present challenges because it’s more than 4,200 feet (1,280 meters) above sea level. To compensate for the thinner air and help prevent overheating, we reduced the truck’s power by nearly 20 percent. Even with the reduction in total output potential, Mean Green had ample power to surpass the previous records.”

The previous world record was 218.780 km/h for the flying kilometer and 152.253 km/h in the standing kilometer. The new record speeds are 236.577 km/h for the Flying Kilometer and 153.252 km/h for the Standing Kilometer.

The Mean Green uses Volvo’s VN Day cab, but in order to achieve these performances the truck received a host of exterior modifications which were designed to keep the drag coefficient to as low as possible. Under the hood, the Volvo Mean Green is equipped with the D16 engine which is mated on a modified version of Volvo’s automated I-Shift gearbox, which interacts with the hybrid’s electric motor.

Volvo said that “the combination of an electric motor and Volvo D16 diesel engine delivers 2,100 horsepower and nearly 5,000 lb-ft. torque – of which, 200 horsepower and 885 lb-ft. of torque come from the electric motor”.

Ron Huibers, Volvo Trucks president, North American Sales & Marketing said “Mean Green’s incredible performance underscores the strong potential of hybrid drivelines when applied to the right operation. Neither hybrid or any other alternative fuel technology, like natural gas, is a one-size-fits-all solution, but the technology is available for appropriate applications. While diesel remains the most efficient transportation fuel currently available, we know the future of petroleum is limited. The Volvo Group continues to test and evaluate the merits of a number of alternatives.”

UD’s trucks were never among the most technologically advanced models in their class, but they had a pretty flexible character and thanks to their rugged, robust and unpretentious configuration they’ve always had their place in the transport industry.

However, now we are leaving new times and the pretentions of the transport industry are bigger than ever. UD had do come up with a few improvements if it wanted to survive in this highly competitive segment and the main change was to introduce a host of new automatic transmissions.

The engines were also improved and now are meeting the Euro 5 emission norms. The 13 liter turbo diesel develops from 390 hp to 470 hp. The UD Quon range includes 4 models including the CW 26 400 rigid, and GK 17 400, GW 26 400 and GW 26 470 prime movers with GCM (gross combination mass) ratings between 40.000 and 70.000 kg.

Up until recently UD was a bit behind its rivals as its trucks had dated cabins with poor ergonomy and the engines and transmissions were part of the old generation.

In 2011 however, the Volvo owned company decided that it’s time for a major upgrade in its lineup of medium duty trucks. As a result, it came up with a totally redesigned cab, upgraded engines and even Allison automatic transmissions.

The trucks kept their work horse character and come with GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) ratings between 15.000 kg- 32.000 kg.

Not long ago the amount of technology fitted under a truck bonnet could’ve been categorized as basic and we say that with generosity. But in the latest years we’ve seen a surprising metamorphose among the light and medium duty commercial vehicles and every manufacturer struggles to raise the bar as much as it can to lower the fuel consumption and to improve the driver’s comfort.

Hino’s 500 Series isn’t among the most advanced trucks in the business, but is still a major improvement over the previous generations, especially in the transmission department were it comes with a wide range of manual and automated units.

The truck is also available with different wheelbase lengths and its GVM (gross vehicle mass) ratings range from 8.000kg to 26.000 kg.

The Hino 300 Series is a light commercial duty with a highly versatile character. The truck is based on the Toyota Dyna and shares many elements with its donor.

When Hino engineered the 300 Series, its main objective was to make it as efficient as possible and thanks to the addition of the a Diesel Particulate Active Reduction System (DPR ) the result is pretty good. Besides its good efficiency, the truck also offers generous payload capacities with GVMR (gross vehicle mass rating) that can go up to 8.5 tones.

The Hino 300 Series is available with both regular and wide cab configurations and is powered by a 4.0 liter diesel engine which develops up to 155 hp.

The ACCO is a medium duty truck build by Iveco . The vehicle was designed for the Australian market and is available in a wide range of versions with 4x2, 6x4 and 8x4 axle configurations. Thanks to its versatile character, the truck can be used for waste, distribution and construction applications.

The Iveco ACCO has a long history behind and was launched for first time in 1972. Since then, the truck was continuously improved and the latest major upgrade was made in 2007 when the truck received a new exterior design together with improved comfort and efficiency.

The Iveco Acco is powered by a 2010 Cummins ISL-E5 engine which is available with three power ratings, ranging from 260 hp to 315 hp.

There aren’t many light commercial vehicles available on the market that are able to stack up with success against the Mercedes Vito. The vehicle is one of the best built models in its segment and is equipped with a range of efficient Euro 5 engines which offer payload capacities between 850 kg -1.125 kg. Need a compact vehicle that can move you around with some weight at the back with a minimum investment and low costs of maintenance? Of course you do, everyone in the light commercial industry is looking for something like this. Well, you should take a closer look at the DFSK Loadhopper which does exactly that. Probably most of you never heard of it, but the DFSK Loadhopper is sold in UK and has what it needs to be able to make a compelling case for itself.

It’s main fault? It’s Chinese and this says a lot about its reliability. It’s biggest advantage? It’s priced from only $13.000 (excluding taxes) which makes it the cheapest model in its class and also comes with a standard 3 year warranty which should be able to keep you far from trouble, at least for a while. The DFSK Loadhopper continues the story of models like the Suzuki Carry and is basically a rear wheel drive micro LCV equipped with a 77hp Euro 5 (!) petrol engine.

With a spacious cab and a generous load area the newest Peugeot Expert offers a high level of practicality packed into an attractive design. The vehicle shares the same body and technology with the Fiat Scudo and Citroen Dispatch .

The Peugeot Expert features a 5.0 cubic meters load box in short-wheelbase standard roof version, 6.0 cubic meters for the long wheelbase and 7.0 cubic meters for the long wheelbase high roof model.
