Not many of you heard about JAC, mostly because it’s a Chinese manufacturer which until recently didn’t managed to catch much attention. The company however, has recently made a joint venture with Navistar and started to use Cummins engines for its lineup of trucks.
At the moment, JAC is also in full expansion and plans to conquer new markets. Its lineup of vehicles includes light, medium and heavy duty models and all of them are fairly versatile.
The Heavy duty range of trucks is offered in tractor, mixer, dump and lorry configurations with gross vehicle weights ranging from 13000 kg to 50000 kg.
Tata’s range of light commercial vehicles was definitely starting to show its age, but the company was fully aware of this fact and decided to take some action. As a result, it presented a new truck named Ultra at this year’s New Delhi Auto Expo.
The new Tata Ultra was designed to replace the existing SFC range and features a modern design and contemporary technologies.
The LCV will be offered with in a wide range of models with GVW (gross vehicle weights) ranging from 5 tonnes to 14 tonnes. The new Ultra represents a big step forward for Tata, as it has anything it needs to compete with success against the best models in LCV the segment.
The Tata SFC is a highly versatile LCV built for light commercial applications. Designed as a pickup, the vehicle is available with GVWs (gross vehicle weights) between 3800 kg and 9050 kg.
In its home market the Tata SFC is very successful and it’s specially appreciated for its generous payload capacity, small fuel consumption and the low costs of ownership.
The Tata SFC is offered to a very competitive price ($10.200 starting price) and comes with a service interval of 20,000 kms and a 3 year warranty. The truck is available with a choice of three engines which develop 75 hp, 90 hp and 102 hp.
The Tata Ace Zip is a small LCV based on the Ace model, but it also uses components from the Nano. Powered by a 611cc water cooled engine, the Ace zip is by no means a sporty vehicle, but it receives high marks in the functionality department as thanks to its generous load area it can be used for a wide range of commercial applications. Resembling a conventional pick-up truck the small Tata Ace Zip has a payload capacity of up 600 kg. There is also a passenger version of the Zip and is named the Magic Iris.

While there are a lot of vehicles that claim to be the best off-roader, there is only one which truly deserves this distinction.
With GVWs (gross vehicle weights) between 7,5 – 14, 1 tonnes, the Mercedes Benz Unimog is the ultimate off roader and was build from the ground up to never back down regardless of the working conditions.
Built on the strong base of the legendary Unimog, the 3000-5000 series are the biggest Unimogs ever built and are offered with a choice of two cab configuration and two Euro 5 engines which develop 177 hp and 218 hp.
The U20 is the smallest member of the Unimog family. The truck was launched in 2009 and comes with the typical Unimog versatility. Not many car enthusiast heard about Smith, but this company it’s building electric vehicles since 1920. Smith is specialized only on commercial vehicles and in its long history it didn’t build electric passenger cars, not even one.
The Smith Newton is a fully electric truck based on the Avia’s D Series. The truck can be used for various commercial applications such as mail and parcel delivery, logistics, retail, highway maintenance, and airports.
The Smith Newton is among the largest battery-electric-powered commercial trucks available on today’s market. It offers a maximum payload capacity of up to 16,280 lbs and is powered by a 120 kw electric motor. The Tata Ace was born in 2005 and was designed mostly for the Indian market. While other countries looked with skepticism at the mini trucks segment, India was the perfect market for this type of vehicles as they were cheap, efficient and also very practical.
With a length of only 3800 mm and a width of 1500 mm, the Tata Ace is the smaller brother of the Super Ace model and is positioned in the same segment with models like the Daihatsu Hijet, Piaggio Porter or Suzuki Carry.

Tata has started to be known worldwide after they’ve announced the production of the Nano which is the cheapest passenger car in the world. However, besides passenger cars the company is also building LCVs and trucks and some models are even sold globally.
The Tata Super Ace is a versatile LCV build for short distribution applications and is available with a practical chassis cab configuration. Launched in 2005 the Tata Ace was India’s first four-wheel mini truck. At that time the sub 1-tonne mini truck was a major step ahead for the company, as it received a very good feedback from the market.
The Iveco Daily is one of the most versatile LCVs from the market and besides the typical van and pickup versions, the model is also available in off road guise.
Thanks to its huge ground clearance (30 cm) and the capable 4x4 system, the Iveco Daily was engineered to be able to conquer the most difficult terrains regardless of what weight is carrying at the back.
Thanks to its utilitarian nature, the Iveco Daily 4x4 can be used in construction and infrastructure maintenance work sites or for special missions such as snow ploughs, fire fighting, emergency and civil protection vehicles.
The off road LCV is offered in short wheelbase (3,050 mm) and long wheelbase (3,400 mm) versions, and is also available as a crew cab. There are two gross vehicle weight versions available, namely the 3.5 t with a maximum load of 2,250 kg on the front axle and 2,800 kg on the rear axle; and 5.5 t with a maximum load 2,450 kg on the front axle and 3,700 kg on the rear axle.
