At the 2012 Mid-America Trucking Show in Louisville, Kenworth presented the new T680 highway truck which is the most aerodynamic vehicle built by the company. The new Kenworth T680 puts accent on efficiency, performance and comfort and is fitted with a bunch of innovative features.
The 2.1 meters T680 Cab was designed to fills the blank between the 1.9-meter T660 cab and the 2.3 T700 cab models. The truck is being aimed at linehaul, pickup and delivery, and regional freight operators and is available with either single- or sleeper-cab configuration. At the heart of the truck sits the 12.9L Paccar MX engine, while the Cummins ISX15 engine is also available as an option. The new Kenworth T-680, will go into production on May 21.
The new Kenworth T680 features a stylish and aerodynamic body shape. The sculpted full-height roof, bumper, hood and the full height side extenders were all optimized to offer a low drag coefficient and superior aerodynamic performances. The typical Kenworth radiator grille gives the truck a familiar face and is made of corrosion-resistant aluminum wire mesh.
Compared to the other T- series trucks in the company lineup, the T680 was engineered with 65 percent more storage capacity, a 50 percent larger windshield, 40 percent less interior noise, 30 percent larger door openings, and best-in-class forward lighting. The sculpted, full-height sleeper roof looks fairly good and gives the truck a dynamic appearance.
The lightweight and corrosion-resistant cab features stamped aluminum panels joined with self-penetrating Henrob fasteners, which has an extremely solid structure and is more resistant to noise and vibrations.
For the new 3 piece hood Kenworth engineers used a special lightweight material called sheet molding compound (SMC). Thanks to its lightweight nature the hood requires only minimum effort power to be lift.
The aerodynamic bummer is also made of two separate pieces which gel together seamlessly while the chassis fairings are made from a new durable material (Thermoplastic Olefin) that is not affected by the sunlight.
The dual lamp Halogen headlights come with optional with High Intensity Discharge Xenon lights and are nicely integrated into the jeweled headlamps. To offer a high efficiency all standard exterior lights use LED technology.
Thanks to the wide opening doors and the well placed steps it is pretty easy to climb onboard. The door is made of lightweight materials and bedsides the fact that is extremely durable, is also designed to offer a smooth airflow around the cab and minimize noises. A pressure relief valve equalizes interior and exterior air pressure to make the door easy to open and close.
The truck offers acres of space inside and the overall cabin is typical Kenworth with a slightly curved dash and a four spoke steering wheel.
The instrument cluster is easy to read and is fitted with nine standard gauges and other 12 additional indicators. Besides the new instrument cluster the truck is equipped with an innovative Driver Performance Center (DPC) which features a 5-inch color display that includes current truck information, diagnostic data, and pop-up alerts. The dashboard is also fitted with Kenworth’s NavPlus which offers the possibility to connect it to cell phones via Bluetooth and is also available with voice commands.
The controls have an intuitive layout and there are new switches available which utilize a toggling feature, while also maintaining rocker switch functionality.
Kenworth was already known for its highly comfortable seats and the new T680 makes no exception. The seats feature an advanced air suspension system that automatically adjusts to various driver weights. Besides the standard seats the truck is also available with an optional passenger 180-degree swivel seat which allows the occupant to face into the sleeper. The high driving position offers a great road visibility while the adjustable steering wheel further enhances the comfort.
Thanks to the panoramic one-piece windshield the road visibility is also great, but unlike the Freightliner Cascadia which is fitted with a two piece windshield, in case of a partial damage the Kenworth’s screen would be more expensive to replace.
The sleeper cab is 96 inches wide with a high ceiling, 60 cubic feet of storage, and a full-height wardrobe cabinet. Moreover, the sleeper cabin is fitted with an innovative rotating table which can be used for many purposes.
Other features that can be found inside include a mount for a 23-inch flat screen TV, storage tray for DVD player or video game system, hook up for a microwave, and factory-installed inverter with optional shore power.
Engines and transmissions
The truck is equipped with the Paccar 12.9L MX engine which offers a power range output between 380 hp- 485 hp. with a maximum torque of 1,750 lbs-ft. The Paccar engine has already proven it value as is was used with success by other Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks.
Besides the Paccar engines the Kenworth P680 is also available with the optional Cummins ISX15 engine with ratings range from 400-600 hp with a maximum 2050 lb-ft of peak torque.
The Cummins ISX15 comes with an advanced fuel injection technology, improved cooled EGR subsystem and Cummins VGT Turbocharger. For enhanced performances the engine is also fitted with to the proven Cummins Aftertreatment System that includes Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology.
The Paccar engines are mated to the Eaton UltraShift PLUS automated transmission which offers true proper calibrations that match shift parameters precisely to the PACCAR MX engine.
Kenworth also announced that it will offer the Cummins Westport ISX12 G natural gas engine in its T660, T800, T800 short hood, and W900S models. The engine can run on either compressed or liquefied natural gas. The ISX12 G will come with a range of ratings up to 400 hp. and 1,450 lbs.-ft. of torque, optional engine brake and manual and automatic transmission capability.
