Launched for the 2017 model year, the Q2 is the latest Audi nameplate to hit the market and the company's smallest crossover yet. Underpinned by Volkswagen's MQB platform that is shared with the Golf and the Audi TT among other cars, the Q2 was designed by Marc Lichte and shares styling cues with the larger Q3 and Q5 SUVs. Available with a selection of gasoline and diesel four-cylinder engines, the Q2 enables Audi to compete in a new niche. At 4.2 meters (165 inches) long, the Q2 is about the size of the Mini Countryman, which makes it just the second vehicle to join this premium class.

With no competition from Mercedes-Benz and BMW in the foreseeable future, the Q2 will most likely take a significant bite into the Countryman's sales over the next years thanks to its more rugged design and luxurious interior. With the small crossover having just arrived in dealerships, Audi is launching a limited-edition model to sit at the top of the range. It's called the Q2 Edition #1 and for the time being it is available in the United Kingdom only.

Essentially an S Line model with additional features, the Edition #1 sports a bespoke paint job and handful of custom interior features. On top of that, it comes with extra standard equipment to justify the more expensive price tag. But, more about that in our short review below.

What makes the Audi Q2 Edition #1 special

The first thing that catches the eye when looking at the Edition #1 is the unique color combination. While most of the body is finished in Quantum Grey, the bumpers have Manhattan Gray accents for a distinctive look. Also, the C-pillars are Brilliant Black, while the front grille, rear diffuser, and side mirror caps are painted gloss-black. Rounding off the exterior is a set of 19-inch, five-spoke alloy wheels in Gloss Anthracite Black with diamond-cut rim. The crossover is also equipped with LED headlamps as standard, a no-cost feature only for the Sport and S Line trims.

Inside, the Edition #1 comes with front sports seats wrapped in Nappa leather with contrast stitching and Amaretto brown stripes. The same Amaretto brown adorns the floor mats, knee pads, and door armrests. The dashboard and knee insert trim feature illuminated inlays that can be lit in one of 10 different colors. This feature is usually an option on any other model. Audi also offers a three-month trial of Audi Connect Infotainment Services, which can be upgraded to 36 months with the optional Technology Pack.

Audi had nothing to say about the drivetrain motivating the Edition #1, but it's safe to assume that the range-topping model can be equipped with the more powerful engines. That said, don't expect it to come with the 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit. Instead, look for the 150-horsepower 1.4 TFSI and the 190-horsepower 2.0 TFSI to be on offer. On the diesel front, it should get the 2.0 TDI with either 150 or 190 horsepower, but not the 1.6 TDI with 116 horses.

Set to go on sale from September 2016 for a "limited time," the Edition #1 retails from £31,170 (about $40,540 as of August 2016), a sticker that makes it the range-topping Q2 model in the United Kingdom. For reference, the SE base model starts from £22,470 (around $29,230), while the S Line costs £26,270 (about $34,160) before options.
