The Audi R8 is no stranger to being the subject of a special edition treatment from Audi. The current-generation model alone has received numerous limited-run iterations, including the the R8 V10 Plus “Selection 24h” and the R8 V10 Plus Exclusive Edition that Audi is actually bringing with it to the Los Angeles Auto Show. But, before we got dazzled by the Exclusive Edition and it’s promise to bring laser-light technology to the US market, we need to turn our attention to Japan, where another special edition R8 just broke cover. It’s called the Audi R8 Star of Lucis and it pays homage to the Prince Noctis and the Kingdom of Lucis from the fantasy role-playing game juggernaut, Final Fantasy XV.

You’re probably wondering what Audi, a real life German automaker that we all know and love, has anything to do with the Kingdom of Lucis, a fictional place from Final Fantasy XV. For that we have to go back to July of this year when Sony Pictures released the all-CG rendered Kingsglaive: Final Fantasy XV movie as a precursor to the launch of the actual Final Fantasy XV game later this month. For those who caught the movie, you might have noticed that a 2017 Audi R8 was in it. Well, that was the R8 Star of Lucis in digital form. This one right here is the R8 Star of Lucis in real life.

To make the car feel more exclusive than it already is, Audi Japan and Final Fantasy developer Square Enix decided to build just one model of the R8 Star of Lucis. Just one. That fact alone makes it a lottery to own. Speaking of which, that’s exactly how the R8 Star of Lucis can be won…and then bought. That’s because a raffle will be held on November 21 wherein Audi and Square Enix will pick one winner, who doesn’t actually win the car, but is only afforded the opportunity to buy it for a price of 50 million yen, or around $470,000.

What makes the Audi R8 Star of Lucis special

Before we get started on diving into the Audi R8 Star of Lucis, it’s important to note, at least for those who aren’t familiar with it, what Final Fantasy is.

Final Fantasy is arguably the most successful role-playing video game franchise in history. It’s been around for close to 30 years with 14 different titles and various other off-shoot games. The latest version is Final Fantasy XV, which hits stores on November 29, 2016. Naturally, the unveiling of the R8 Star of Lucis close to the arrival of Final fantasy XV didn’t come by accident.

So, what exactly is the R8 Star of Lucis? First of all, it’s based on the R8 V10 Plus so expect it to carry the standard 5.2-liter V-10 engine that puts out a total of 610 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque. Those numbers allow it to sprint from 0 to 62 mph in just 3.2 seconds to go with a top speed of 205 mph. The R8 V10 Plus has supercar qualities, but what really sets it apart from all other R8s is the preponderance of unique details that are exclusive to R8 Star of Lucis.

First, there’s the color, which is described by Audi Japan as a “deep, dark shade of Ultrossic Black mixed with a hint of purple.” Now I don’t necessarily know what Ultrossic Black is, but if it’s this particular shade that the R8 Star of Lucis comes in, I’ll take Audi Japan’s word for it.

In addition to the unique body finish, The R8 Star of Lucis also gets a handful of carbon fiber elements that have been decorated with the pattern of the Tenebrae oracle clan, another specific reference to Final Fantasy XV. Don’t worry about what the pattern means though because the intricacy of the details is impressive enough in it of itself. Certain sections of the R8 display these patterns, including the front intake strakes, side blades, and the rear wing. The other unique feature of the R8 Star of Lucis is the set of wheels, which comes with a distinctive rose petal pattern that apparently symbolizes the kingdom’s “finely sculpted swords.” Again, no idea what that means but it looks awesome so that’s all that matters.

The interior of the car also gets unique upgrades, even though the details are less distinctive than the exterior. The surface is covered with white and black leather upholstery and is complemented by orange stitching. It also features Audi’s own Virtual Cockpit instrument display and a Bang & Olufsen stereo system.

While other special edition R8s may have more important features - the R8 Exclusive Edition’s laser lights being one of them - the R8 Star of Lucis, by virtue of being a complete and total one-off, arguably counts as the most unique of them all.
