Audi first began production of the compact Q5 luxury crossover in 2008, with the latest second-generation model dropping in 2016 at the Paris Motor Show. Now, there’s a new long-wheelbase iteration, which just debuted at the 2018 Beijing Motor Show to offer Chinese buyers enhanced cabin space and more comfort.

2019 Audi Q5 L Exterior Design And Dimensions

- Same styling as the standard model - Chrome detailing front to back - LED headlights, optional Matrix LED’s - Wheels between 18 and 20 inches in diameter - 15.6 feet long - 3.5 inches added to wheelbase and overall length

When it comes to exterior styling, the 2019 Audi Q5 L is more or less identical to the standard wheelbase model. It gets the same rounded proportions, with plumped-up fender flares rocking creased edges around the outer rims.

Chrome bits and trim are used along the window frames and the roof rails, while the large Singleframe grille gets oodles of the polished metal around the outer edges and within the horizontal grille inserts. The lower intakes and character line also get the stuff.

The fascia is also equipped with LED headlights, but customers will have the option to get theirs with optional Matrix LED’s. Turn signals are integrated with the two-tone side-view mirrors. The taillights and sharp and pointed, bookending the frontend well. More chrome is added to the lower bumper treatment, while a roof spoiler can be found on top of the hatch.

Wheels up to 20 inches in diameter are found in the corners, with base models getting 18-inchers.

That all said, the Q5 L’s most desirable feature is its exterior dimensions. Indeed, this is the first SUV from Audi with a lengthened wheelbase, measuring in at a total of 4.77 meters (15.6 feet) from tip to tail. And that’s exactly what’s demanded in this market.

For those of you keeping score at home, Audi added an extra 88 mm (3.5 inches) to the thing, both in terms of the wheelbase and overall exterior length, resulting in enhanced interior space (more on that in the next section).

You can check out the full breakdown of exterior dimensions below.

2019 Audi Q5 L Interior Design And Dimensions

- Same look and layout as the standard model - Five passengers accommodated - Horizontal dash design - High-end materials like wood trim and aluminum surrounds - Standard panoramic sunroof - Optional Audi Virtual Cockpit feature - Modern driver’s assist features - Extra 4.3 inches in legroom - Same cargo room as before

Note: standard Audi Q5 interior pictured here.

While we did not get any images of the 2019 Audi Q5 L’s interior, we can assume that it’s more or less in line with the design and layout seen on the latest standard Q5 model.

Seating is provided for up to five passengers and their luggage. Those in front will get a wide, horizontal dash design to look at, with high-end materials throughout, including leather upholstery, Alcantara panels and coverings, brushed aluminum, and wood trim.

Up front is a single touchscreen mounted high on the dash, as well as a touch input pad on the center console for controlling the infotainment system. Meanwhile, in the rear, there’s a set of individual entertainment screens mounted to the seat backs.

All told, Audi will offer the Qf L in five unique trim levels, each of which will come with its own set of standard equipment and available options.

Kicking things off will be a standard three-zone automatic air conditioning system, as well as Audi’s smartphone interface to keep you connected. Up above, a standard panoramic glass roof lets in loads of natural light.

Extra outlay will get you into the mid-grade trim level, which offers nice features like a high-end MMI navigation plus infotainment system, as well as the all-digital Audi virtual cockpit feature for the driver, the latter of which replaces the standard analogue needles and gauges with a single large screen that can be configured to display a number of different readouts, including turn-by-turn navigation, among other things.

Higher in the line, Audi is offering stuff like a Bang & Olufsen sound system that comes with 3D sound features, which is perfect for the audiophiles out there.

The 2019 Q5 L will also come with a variety of driver’s assist systems, which includes standouts such as the Audi pre-sense city safety feature as standard across the line. Additional packages can be had that add in further, more advanced features, if desired.

However, once again the dimensions are what matter most in in a model like this. The Q5 L joins three other China-bound, lengthened models in Audi’s lineup for the market, which also includes sedans like the A4 L, A6 L, and A8 L.

As we mentioned above, the longer exterior length and wheelbase yield an increase to the rear seat room, with passengers enjoying an additional 110 mm (4.3 inches) in knee room total.

Audi also says that depending on the position of the rear bench, cargo room remains the same as it was before, offering between 550 and 1,550 liters (19.4 to 54.7 cubic feet) for things.

2019 Audi Q5 L Performance

2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in two tunes 190 horsepower or 252 horsepower 0 to 60 mph in 8.6 or 6.7 seconds Modestly frugal with fuel consumption Seven-speed automatic transmission quattro AWD as standard

Mounted behind the Q5 L’s large Singleframe grille, Audi saw fit to pack in a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder TFSI engine, an absolutely classic powerplant for the automaker. Found in a variety of different models across the Audi stable, this engine is offered in two different performance levels for the Q5 L, with output levels pegged at either 190 horsepower or 252 horsepower.

When you put your foot firmly to the floor (or that is, when you tell your chauffeur to put their foot firmly to the floor), the 0-to-60 mph sprint is completed in 8.6 seconds for the 190-horsepower iteration and 6.7 seconds for the 252-horsepower iteration.

Consumption is rated at either 6.9 liters per 100 km (34.1 mpg) for the 190-horse option, and 7.3 liters per 100 km (32.2 mpg) for the 252-horse option. Meanwhile, emissions come to 164 g/km (263.9 g/mi) for the 190-horse option and 174 g/km (280.0 g/mi) for the 252-horse option.

Both models come standard with a seven-speed S tronic transmission. As you probably expect, the seven-speed connects to a quattro AWD as standard.

The AWD system gets the latest Audi ultra technology as standard as well, which will seamlessly transmission between two-wheel drive and all-wheel drive to offer enhanced grip when you need it, or greater efficiency when you don’t.

Finally, the standard model weighs in at over 4,000 pounds, so don’t expect the Q5 L to be the best-handling machine out there. But hey, since you’re reading about the lengthened version here, you probably don’t really care about that anyway.

2019 Audi Q5 L Pricing

Audi is offerings as many as five trim levels and two drivetrain configurations for the 2019 Q5 L.

The trim levels (listed from the bottom up) include the Vogue, Lifestyle, Design, Sport, and Sport plus, with differentiation made between each thanks to various exterior details and interior equipment.

Each model will be produced in northern China at the Changchun plant through Audi’s joint venture with FAW-Volkswagen.

Sales commence this summer.

Pricing is so far unannounced, but expect the 2019 Q5 L to come at a premium over the 383,600 yuan ($60,214 at current exchange rates, 05/08/2018) price tag attached to the standard Chinese Q5 model.

2019 Audi Q5 L Competition

BMW X1 Long-Wheelbase

Per tradition, Bimmer is keen to steal Audi’s thunder wherever possible, and that includes long versions of compact crossovers sold in China. The X1 certainly fits the bill against the Q5 L, bringing all the same good stuff as its shorter sibling, such as sharp exterior styling, aggressive proportions, and an upright kidney grille in the fascia. In addition, this China-bound iteration adds as much as 4.3 inches in length, with exterior dimensions stretched to 179.7 inches from tip to tail. The powertrain department is occupied by three gas engines, with both FWD and AWD on offer as well.

Final Thoughts

As is tradition for luxury cars aimed at the Chinese market, the Audi Q5 L brings style, prestige, and plenty of curb appeal, all with an expanded space in the back seat to give you and your fellow passengers that extra bit of comfort. It’s a tempting package for anyone looking to get into the long wheelbase lifestyle, especially when you consider the Q5’s tall-riding road presence.

And that’s really what helps the Q5 L stand out against the vast majority of alternatives out there. While other automakers are creating longer versions of four-door sedans, the Q5 L crossover helps break from the pack. And sometimes, that’s just as important as all the rest of it.
