With a concept vehicle introduced in November 2013 and the production design unveiled last June, Ford is really taking its time rolling out the 2015 Edge, but it won’t be too much longer until Ford dealerships around the world are selling this stylish mid-size crossover. Ahead of a sales launch that will likely begin next month, units of the new Edge began rolling off the production line at Ford’s Oakville assembly plant in Toronto, Canada this week.

As part of a transformation to this assembly plant, Ford has invested $700 million Canadian ($561 million USD) and increased its workforce by hiring 1,400 new workers to build both the 2015 Edge and as the next-gen Lincoln MKX. The extra hands will definitely be required as the new Edge becomes available in a large number of global markets over the course of this year with varying build combinations based on region.

For example, in addition to the three gas engines offered to North American buyers, the Edge will also be available with Ford’s 2.0-liter Duratorq diesel engine rated at up to 207 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. There will even be right-hand-drive models for required markets.

Why it matters

The 2015 Ford Edge joins the automaker’s One Ford initiative as a truly global vehicle with production taking place in Toronto, Canada and exports going out to more than 100 countries. One of the Edge’s biggest new markets is Europe, where it will slot above the Ford Kuga (known as the Ford Escape in the U.S.). Unlike the Escape/Kuga, the Edge will wear the same name in all of its available markets.

2015 Ford Edge

Introduced last summer, the 2015 Ford Edge is the first major redesign for the mid-size crossover since its debut in 2006. In the U.S., the new Edge is available with three engine options. With its most fuel-efficient drivetrain, it received EPA fuel economy estimates of 20 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. The Edge should be in dealers soon (Ford says during the first quarter), and it will be offered in four trim levels (SE, SEL, Titanium and Sport), with starting prices ranging from $28,100 up to $38,100.
