The Full Story

Buyers looking to get a little top-shelf treatment with their 6 are in luck, as the latest model year brings loads of new premium touches, including high-end materials like Japanese Sen wood and Nappa leather. The driving experience is also much quieter when cruising on the the freeway, while the interior layout was updated with a fresh horizontal design that we think looks fantastic.

The exterior looks quite good as well, imbued with the latest Kodo design language.

Speed fans will be happy to know that the 6 is offered with a new turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine option that should do well to complement Mazda’s unflappable suspension tuning. In addition, you can even buy yours with a manual transmission, if desired. Thank you Mazda!

The lower trims produce as much as 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, plus come with cylinder deactivation technology for added efficiency. Meanwhile, the new turbo engine makes 250 horsepower and a head-turning 310 pound-feet of torque at just 2,000 rpm.

Go for the Sport trim level, and you’ll get an electronic parking brake, cloth upholstery, dual-zone climate control, remote keyless entry, a push-button start, cruise control, six-speaker audio, Bluetooth support, and an 8-inch infotainment display. Outside, the Sport gets 17-inch alloy wheels and standard LEDs for the headlights and taillights, while driver assists include rear cross-traffic alert, smart city brake support, and blind spot monitoring. Add in the automatic transmission, and the Sport comes with additional assistance features, such as lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, high-beam assist, and more.

Above the Sport is the Touring, which tosses the cloth in favor of leatherette for the seats, as well as a standard six-speed automatic transmission, advanced keyless entry, and a six-way power driver’s seat. There are also HVAC vents for rear-seated passengers, heated front seats, and a power moonroof. Finally, the corners of the Touring get stuffed with 19-inch alloy wheels.

Opt into the Grand Touring model, and you’ll enjoy 11-speaker audio, SiriusXM radio, navigation, heated side mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and paddle shifters on the steering column, not to mention that torquey turbo engine under the hood.

The penultimate trim level is the Grand Touring Reserve, which adds full leather seating, a heads-up display, active traffic sign recognition, an eight-way power driver’s seat, six-way power front passenger’s seat, adaptive front lighting, a rear spoiler, heated rear seats, and a heated steering wheel, not to mention, for the first time, ventilated front seats.

The top of the line is occupied by the Signature model, which offers new colors for the leather seating, Japanese Sen Wood trim, a 360-degree around view monitor, parking sensors front and back, a 7.0-inch digital gauge cluster display, and a gunmetal front grille insert.
