Ever since the late ‘90s, Ford’s line of F-Series Super Duty pickup trucks have been designed to meet the demands of customers who use their vehicles to get the job done. Now, the Super Duty is gearing up for a major refresh heading into the 2020 model year, with a debut slated for the 2019 Chicago Auto Show.

Ready To Work

With that in mind, it makes sense Ford focused primarily on the performance specs for the 2020 model year update.

“Our new Super Duty has more power, more payload and towing capability, and better technology than ever,” said Kumar Galhotra, Ford president, North America.

Making it happen with the latest 2020 model year is a new line of powerplants, including both gas and diesel options.

Kicking it off is a standard 6.2-liter V-8, just like the outgoing model. Output for this lump is expected to remain static at 385 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.

However, above this is a new 7.3-liter V-8 gas option, which Ford expects to be “the most powerful gas V-8 in its class.” Details on this mammoth powerplant include a new cam-in-block design, as well as an overhead valve architecture, cast iron block, forged steel crankshaft, port injection, variable-valve timing, and oil jets to cool the pistons under heavy loads.

Finally, the Super Duty is once again offered with a 6.7-liter Power Stroke diesel, which now features 36,000-psi fuel injection plus new injectors, a variable-geometry turbo, as well as added strength for the cylinder head, the block, the connecting rods, the bearings, and the steel pistons. Output is so far unannounced, but it’s expected to remain static at 450 horsepower and 935 pound-feet of torque.

The Ford F-Series Super Duty also gets a new transmission option for 2020, which now includes a fresh TorqShift 10-speed automatic. Offered as a replacement for the outgoing model’s six-speed auto box, the new 10-speed offers a wider gear ratio span, plus electronic drive modes that include normal, tow/haul, eco, and slippery, as well as deep sand and snow. Interestingly, the 10-speed is the same size as the outgoing model’s six-speed, and it weighs just 3.5 pounds more.

Our guess is that the truck is now more comfortable to drive, with less NVH overall.

As expected, the 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty gets a few new bits and pieces for the exterior and interior designs as well.

Meanwhile, the interior gets new decorative appliqués and materials, plus a refreshed tech suite for added comfort and convenience, not to mention enhanced work capability.

One highlight feature is the Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which includes a knob to steer the trailer directly through the onboard reverse camera system. This assist also includes a guidance system that shows you the correct trailer angle and direction, as well as suggested steering inputs to accurately place the trailer where you want it.

Complementing the system is a wireless device charging feature and USB-C ports for extra smartphone support.

Finally, buyers can get theirs with semi-autonomous drive systems like the optional lane-keeping alert, Blind Spot Information System, and Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Detection.

The 2020 Ford F-Series Super Duty arrives at dealers this fall.

For reference, the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado HD is equipped with a 6.6-liter gas V-8 as standard, which produces 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque. There’s also a 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 option that makes 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque, boosting towing to 35,500 pounds.

As for the Ram HD, engine options include a 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 making 383 horsepower and 400 pound-feet of torque. Payload is rated at 3,060 pounds and towing is rated at 13,890 pounds. At the top of the heap is the 6.7-liter turbodiesel Cummins inline six-cylinder, which doles out 400 horsepower and 1,000 pound-feet, with a payload rating of 7,680 pounds and a towing capacity of 35,100 pounds.
