2020 Polestar 2 Performance EV Teased But Will It Be Able to Beat the 2019 Tesla Model 3?

Don't look now, but it appears that Polestar has another winner in its hands

Polestar’s automotive lineup is slowly taking shape after the Swedish automaker unveiled a teaser image of the Polestar 2 sedan. The image doesn’t show much of the car other than a birds-eye-view glimpse of the rear section. It’s probably the most we’ll be getting until the next teaser rolls around. What we know at this point is that the Polestar 2 will make its debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show as an electric sedan that will compete directly against the Tesla Model 3. Pricing for the Polestar 2 is expected to slot somewhere between $45,000 to $50,000.

So this is what the Polestar 2 looks like. Ok, so it’s not really the whole car, but we do get a nice look at the rear section, and even without revealing too much, the image does point to a few interesting design details that we can peruse over.

One of the most intriguing details we noticed is the trunk lid or the shortness of one. Instead, the short trunk lid and the extended rear window points to the Polestar 2 carrying a fastback design similar to that of the Audi A5. You’ll also notice that the fenders bulge out more than we expected. This suggests that the Polestar 2 could carry a curvier profile than the Polestar 1. That’d be an interesting take considering that the automaker is pegging the Polestar 2 as the entry-level model opposite the flagship Polestar 1. I’m guessing they’re taking more design liberties here.

Outside of the shape and profile of the Polestar 2, you’ll also notice that the taillights are full-width, a clear sign that we’re going to see more of this layout after it exploded in popularity in 2018. It seems like Volvo and Polestar are in on the bandwagon, too. It’s too early to assume that the Polestar 2 will look as clean as the Polestar 1, but the early returns are promising, limited as they are. I'm not opposed to the Polestar 2 carrying the "Thor's Hammer" headlamps that Polestar adopted from Volvo, as well. If there's anything we know about the business, when you hit gold in a design, you squeeze every last ounce of opportunity in using it.

We do know a few things about the Polestar 2, one of which is that it will sit on top of Volvo’s Compact Modular Architecture.

There’s also been talk that the Polestar 2 will be produced in a different production facility relative to the Polestar 1 and the upcoming Polestar 3 SUV. The latter two models will share the same production facility in Chengdu, China. The Polestar 2, on the other hand, will be built somewhere else on account of Polestar’s plan to accommodate production of 50,000 units annually.

A lot of these talks remain fluid so there’s a chance that they could change as the model’s debut nears. What we know at this point is that Polestar has a lot riding on the success of the Polestar 2. The new automaker will have on all hands on deck in anticipation of the model’s world debut at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show this March.
