Sometimes it’s baffling to see automakers ignore cars in its line up that need a little care and attention to become the cash cows. The Frontier is a classic example of that. Midsize trucks sell well on the market today, but Nissan has been lousy with development for the Frontier. However, things might change soon as a new Frontier may hit the roads very soon.

The Midsize Pickup Truck Market Is Booming

The Nissan Frontier has been the same since 2005, other than a few tweaks and updates here and there. Despite the same old design being carried on for almost 15 years now, nearly 80,000 copies of the Frontier were sold in 2018, showing that the truck still has a lot of life and potential left in it. But, when compared to the Toyota Tacoma and the Chevy Colorado, Nissan is still far behind as the Japanese brand sold 245,000 units of the Tacoma and Chevy sold some 135,000 examples of the Colorado in the same timeframe.

The company is all set to bring the new Frontier much sooner than expected – well, not exactly sooner because it should have been here at least six years back. Nissan’s senior vice president for global design, Alfonso Albaisa, told Autoblog a new Frontier is "almost finished." Ivan Espinosa, Nissan's vice president of product planning, said, "it is something we are actively working on, and will soon be coming into the market."

What The Current Frontier Offers

The current Nissan Frontier is one of the most affordable pickup trucks available on the market today. At $19,000 a pop for the base trim, you cannot really complain much; but this ‘cheap’ tag is visible inside out.The towing and payload capacities make matters worse. While the 2.5-liter, four-cylinder engine that develops 152 horses is mediocre at best, the top-of-the-line engine offers some consolation. It is a 4.0-liter, V-6 engine that churns out 261 ponies and 281 pound-feet of torque.

Conclusion

Apart from the confirmation from the bosses, we don’t have any other news or updates about the new Frontier. Given that the market has survived with the same face for 15 years, Nissan better offer an entirely new truck. Do you think Nissan can still capture the market with the Frontier? Will the new iteration have enough to give a stiff competition to the Toyota Tacoma and the Chevrolet Colorado? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
