Alfa Romeo->ke1386 really needed a couple of statement vehicles to show that it's back into its groove, and following last year’s launch of the 4C->ke3773 and the debut of the all-new Giulia,->ke3472 Alfa Romeo->ke1386 could soon start setting its sights on volume segments. There is no more volume in today’s market than for crossovers->ke288 and SUVs,->ke145 and during the recent introduction of the 2016 Alfa Romeo Giulia QV, Fiat->ke30 Chrysler’s->ke21 Sergio Marchionne reportedly confirmed that Alfa would be adding not one but two CUVs.

A report from Autocar says that the new crossovers will be introduced sometime between 2016 and 2018, with the larger model positioned close to the BMW X5.->ke326 Even though this crossover will have a distinctive appearance both inside and out, it will share its platform with the upcoming 2016 Maserati Levante.

The smaller of the two crossovers will reportedly compete with the BMW X->ke2553 and share a platform with a new Fiat/Jeep product that has yet to be identified. The big news is that it could offer a sportier QV model with the 1.75-liter engine from the 4C under the hood. Based on spy shots, this crossover will be larger than the current 2014 Fiat 500L.

Why it matters

Be it luxury, performance or entry-level models, automakers looking to grow market share need to get on the crossover/SUV bandwagon, and it looks like Alfa Romeo has that exact plan in mind. By 2018, the Italian brand’s lineup will boast two crossovers that share platforms with other Fiat Chrysler models.
