Launched in 2001 as a replacement for the Virage, the Aston Martin Vanquish gained an "S" badge when it was updated in 2004. The Vanquish S disappeared altogether when the company discontinued the model in 2007 and didn't return when the nameplate was revised in 2012. Come 2016 and Aston Marin reintroduced the Vanquish S with the car's mid-cycle facelift.

Naturally, the update is more about a revised V-12 engine than anything else. There's great news in this department, as the big 5.9-liter V-12 has been massaged to deliver 592 horsepower. This figure isn't exactly new for the Vanquish, but up until now it was offered on the limited-edition Vanquish Zagato only. Compared to the outgoing model, the Vanquish S benefits from an extra 24 horsepower, while torque remained unchanged at 465 pound-feet. The GT is also a tenth-second quicker from 0 to 62 mph (3.5 ticks versus 3.6). Top speed is the same at 201 mph, but that's nothing to sneeze at.

Visual changes include a new aerodynamic package that includes a revised front splitter and rear diffuser in exposed carbon-fiber. The Vanquish also gets new quad exhaust outlets. Optionally, customers can get carbon-fiber hood louvers, new forged five-spoke wheels, and a choice of "striking painted graphics packs."

Inside, the Vanquish S gets further personalization options, such as a new "Filopgraph" quilted leather, Satin Chopped carbon-fiber fascia panel, and new embroidery on the headrests. The sumptuous Bridge of Weir Caithness leather offers an added touch of luxury and tactility.

Available in both Coupe and Volante body styles, the Vanquish S retails from £199,950 in the U.K., €262,950 in Germany, and $294,950 in the U.S. Deliveries will commence in December 2016.

Why it matters

Needless to say, the Vanquish S isn't all that different inside and out, but this is the kind of update you have to expect from Aston Martin. All facelifts have been like that up until now, and it's obvious that this strategy won't change anytime soon. However, there's plenty of good news under the hood, where the V-12 received a significant power update. With 592 horsepower on tap, the Vanquish S is the most powerful Vanquish to date. For reference, it boasts 72 extra horses and its a full second quicker than the first-generation Vanquish S. Not bad!
