It looks like Audi wants to take a share from the small-electric SUV segment. This news comes just days after we heard that Volkswagen is also planning for a baby electric SUV under its I.D. line up. Audi plans to pit its product against the upcoming Tesla Model Y. With the way we’re hearing news of small SUVs being planned by automakers, it looks like electric sedans will die sooner than expected.

We Are Excited About This Already

Andreas Mindt, Audi’s Head of Exterior Design, announced this at the debut of the Audi e-Tron in the Netherlands yesterday. According to AutoWeek Netherlands, Mindt said that the German company plans to unveil a “smaller e-Tron SUV,” a car that is described as a compact electric SUV, according to AutoWeek Netherlands, who were present at the event.

This Year Will Be Electric!

This is not to be confused with the different version of the e-Tron, the e-Tron Sportback, that is expected to be launched later this year. This Model Y rival will be a different vehicle. It looks like the Geneva Auto Show is set to become host to a lot of electric vehicle debuts.

Our Take

Now that we have many players throwing in their hats in what can be described as “the most hot and happening segment” in the entire auto industry, we can expect electrification adoption to happen at a brisk pace. While the mainstream companies are confident of cracking the code, Tesla is already predicting a demand of 500,000 to a million units of the Model Y annually. Does this announcement of an Audi electric baby SUV make things tougher for the Musk-owned company? Let us know what you think about this in the comments section below.
