A number of automakers may be gearing up for the Paris Motor Show->ke227 next month, but Audi’s looking ahead to the Los Angeles Auto Show->ke211 in November 2014 to preview its new design language through what’s being described as a large saloon-coupe->ke141 concept.

Sources close to Autocar indicates that the new concept will be used as a springboard for a potential flagship, four-door model that will replace the A8->ke1089 as the company’s top-of-the-line luxury->ke505 sedan. Not surprisingly, the future model is going to be called the A9.

The concept will also be unveiled to showcase Audi’s->ke14 new design direction developed under the stewardship of Marc Lichte, the same man who designed the current-generation Volkswagen Golf->ke164 and Passat->ke224.

There aren’t a lot of details surrounding the concept at this point, but Autocar’s sources suggest that the concept will feature a number of never-before-seen design features, including a new Singleframe grille and laser headlamps. The concept’s interior will also be drastically different from anything we’ve seen Audi do in recent years. A new digital instrument cluster is expected to be one of the highlights of the concept’s interior, as well as new connectivity options Audi’s currently developing for the next-generation A8->ke1089 and the A9->ke3718.

A production version of the concept is expected to follow, although that model isn’t expected to arrive until 2017.

Why It Matters

This is pretty big news from a company that's been the driving force of automotive technology in recent years. Remember, Audi was one of the pioneers of LED lights when those were first introduced in the market.

The arrival of this concept in Los Angeles will finally give us an idea on what future Audis will look like, including the highly-anticipated A9. Speaking of the A9, I can only imagine what that car's going to look like and how it's going to be presented. The A8 set a really high bar for luxury and technology, so Audi's going to need something special for the A9 to really make an impression.

Audi A9

The Audi A9 is being billed as the most luxurious model has ever built. Those are strong words that hype up the A9's arrival that much more. There have been a lot of rumors about what the luxury sedan will look like, so it's a exciting knowing that the first clues will finally arrive at the Los Angles Auto Show in October.

There have also been rumors that the A9 will be built on the same platform as the current Porsche Panamera->ke1840. Should that be the case, Audi has a lot of ways to package the A9, including the chance to build both rear-and four-wheel-drive models.

Who knows, we might even see the A9 feature a number of engine systems, including a hybrid version. Everything's in play at this point and to be honest, I'm getting more and more excited to see this LA-bound concept and to learn more about Audi's future.
