Unveiled in 2015, the BMW M2 became the spiritual successor to the 1M Coupe and gained notoriety for being a closer rendition to the original M3 than the modern M4. Come 2018 and BMW unveiled the M2 Competition, a more powerful version of the coupe.

While Competition-branded cars are usually upgrades to the regular M model, the M2 Competition is actually a replacement for the standard M2, which was discontinued. Upgrades inside and out are rather mild, but the Competition variant stands out for featuring the engine from the bigger M4 under the hood. Available to order starting this month, the M2 Competition can now be customized through the company's online configurator. Let's have a closer look at the options.

Visuals

The first thing you'll notice when you open the configurator is that there aren't too many color options. This isn't unusual for M cars, but it's a bit disappointing, especially given the options. The standard color is Alpine White, but you have four more options if you're willing to spend another $550. Unfortunately, two of them are rather boring for a sports car: black and silver. The good news is you also have access to Long Beach Blue and Sunset Orange, two livelier hues.

Next up, you need to pick a set of wheels. There are two standard options, both featuring Y-spoke designs and 19-inch diameters. There's black and a two-tone finish with silver. 20-inch wheels are also available, but not listed in the configurator yet.

Interior

Inside the cabin, you can pick between two types of stitching. It's either blue or orange, colors that are most evident on the seats. Naturally, it's better to combine these with the blue or orange exterior color for a cool match. Once you select the stitching, it's time to move to the trim on the dashboard and the center console. Again, you get to choose between two options. There's the classy high-gloss black with pearl chrome finish or the race-inspired carbon-fiber trim.

Other Options

BMW also offers the Executive Package for the M2 Competition. The bundle costs $1,200 and adds wireless charging and WiFi hotspot, speed limit information, a heated steering wheel, adaptive LED lights, and automatic high beams. Four more stand-alone options are available, starting with the moonroof, which costs $1,050. Adding a BMW roundel or an M logo to the valve stem caps of the wheels is much more affordable at $20. Finally, you can add the M Driver's Package for $2,500 and the M double-clutch transmission with Drivelogic for $2,900.

All told, adding all the options available will set you back an extra $9,000 or so. Specifically, the coupe retails from $58,900, while an optioned-up model costs $68,115, including the $995 destination and handling fee.
