It hasn't been long since the BMW X2 arrived to slot between the X1 and X2, and we're already expecting a full-blown M version. The X2 M has yet to be confirmed, but BMW just launched a range-topping model with an "M35i" badge.

The dark-than-chrome color was applied o the grille surround, cooling vents in the front bumper, mirror caps, and the bigger exhaust pipes in the M-spec rear apron. The 19-inch, M Sport light-alloy wheels also feature Cerium Grey accents.

The SUV's interior is also based on the M Sport package, so you'll find an M Sport leather steering wheel with shift paddles and a pair of sportier front seats with integrated headrests. The seats are available in three designs: FabricTrigon/Alcantara in black with blue accents, Leather Dakota Magma red with black accents, and perforated Dakota black leather. Matching seatbelts in an M design are also on offer. Finally, the door sills sports "M35i" lettering.

But it's by no means regular, as it was retuned by M Performance. This is a first for the German brand. Upgraded to deliver 306 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of twist, it's BMW's most powerful four-cylinder engine. BMW also claims that the X2 M35i is the most powerful sports utility coupe, but this isn't necessarily true, as the coupe-style Mercedes-AMG GLA45 comes with 355 horsepower and 332 pound-feet on tap.

The engine mates to the already familiar eight-speed, Steptronic transmission, and an xDrive AWD system. Launch control is standard and enables the crossover to hit 62 mph from a standing start in 4.9 seconds. The X2 is also equipped with an M Sport differential installed in the front axle, which is a first for the M Performance division.

The M sports suspension, included as standard, boasts stiffer spring and damper settings.

Needless to say, the M35i is far from being a proper X2 M model, but it's a good start.
