For regular folks like us, the world of high-end luxury is nothing more than a fantasy. But for those who have the resources to get access to the clouds, there are items like luxury cars and limited edition timepieces to welcome them with open arms. In the case of Breitling and Bentley, it’s a combination of the two things, as the Swiss watchmaker recently showed with the introduction of the ultra limited Bentley GT Dark Sapphire Edition watch.

By itself, the “Dark Sapphire” name already screams luxury, and I haven’t even gotten into the actual timepiece. Breitling says that the watch takes inspiration from the new Continental GT, one of the few cars in the world that can legitimately lay claim to being one of the most luxurious ones, too. Name, inspiration, and design cues notwithstanding, the Bentley GT Dark Sapphire Edition is also limited to just 500 units so there’s no guarantee that everyone in the world who expresses interest in buying the watch will get their hands on one. Put all of these elements together and you can understand why this kind of watch is really reserved for the upper echelon of today’s society, exactly like the luxury sedan from which it’s inspired from. Maybe someday I'll have enough disposable income to be able to afford a watch like this. Until then, I'll reserve my seat with the rest of you and admire it from a distance.

This is what a limited edition Breitling is all about

I don’t proclaim myself to be an expert in high-end timepieces, but I do know my around watches, at least for the most part. Having said that, Breitling’s limited edition Bentley GT Dark Sapphire Edition watch is perplexing for its incredible detail and ingenuity.

Let’s start with the case. Since this is Breitling we’re talking about, plastic, glass, or quartz won’t cut it with this watch. Instead, Breitling uses a Breitlight polymer, which by the way is proprietary, meaning that it’s Breitling’s own creation. According to the watchmaker, the material is both scratch and corrosion resistent, as well as non-magnetic and non-allergenic. In other words, it’s made from supreme quality, the kind that we can normally associate with a watch company that’s been around since 1884. That’s 133 years, ladies and gentlemen.

Moving on, the Bentley GT Dark Sapphire Edition also features a Dark Sapphire shade from which it gets its name. The exclusive color is similar to one that Bentley is offering for the Continental GT, making for another useful tie-in between watch and car. Even the trim around the watch’s dial comes in a diamond pattern, evoking the stitching we see in the interior of the Continental GT. Even the glare-proofed sapphire crystals that protect each side of the watch is another page off of Breitling’s luxury playbook.

Unfortunately, the watchmaker has yet to give a specific price on the super limited Bentley GT Dark Sapphire Edition watch. Make no mistake though; the watch will not come cheap. Breitling is known for having some of the most expensive watches in the world with some models selling for as much as five figures. Given the exclusivity attached to this particular timepiece, combined with the involvement of Bentley itself, don’t expect Breitling’s Bentley GT Dark Sapphire Edition cost anything less than an arm and a leg. Maybe even a kidney.
