Can Lamborghini Get Even More Extreme With Its Models?

It's possible, especially if its race car division has anything to say about it

There are some things in the auto industry that are completely indisputable, one of which is Lamborghini’s reputation for being the creator of some of the most extreme supercars in the world. In the past few years alone, we’ve seen Sant’Agata come up with the Aventador J, Veneno Roadster, and most recently, the Centenario. But what if I told you that Lamborghini can go even deeper into its maniacal side and come up with future cars that border on being complete lunacy? It could actually happen now that the company has announced a closer working relationship between its road car division and the Squadra Corse racing team.

News of this development arrived on the heels of the Lamborghini Huracán Super Trofeo Evo’s launch, a car that could just as well serve as a preview of what we can expect from the tighter relationship between the two Lambo divisions. No less than the automaker’s motorsport aftersales boss, Silvestro D’Amico, hinted to Autocar the possibilities of what this kind of partnership could create for the brand. “We are still new to motorsport compared to other companies in this field, but already we are having our design department working more closely with the racing side,” he said. “There will be more exchanges of information and technologies.” Think of what these exchanges of information and technologies can do when they’re applied to road-going cars. This kind of thing has been happening in the industry a lot these days, most recently between Mercedes-AMG and the Mercedes Formula One team. We all know what came out of that, so is it possible that Lamborghini will eventually follow the same road?

Who's excited for this development?

I’m well aware that Lamborghini has shunned the thought of building a hypercar because “it’s a leader, not a follower.” Okay, sure, Lamborghini. I will take you on your word, but I do need to say too that the winds in the auto industry change instantaneously almost all of the time. I’ll take you on your word, one one hand, but I’ll also have a grain of salt on the other.

I’m especially convinced now that there’s something afoot within the company after hearing about this “closer” relationship between the automaker’s racing and road car divisions. We saw how the Huracán Super Trofeo Evo turned out so don’t think for one second that Lamborghini isn’t already thinking of something that it can do to showcase the strengths of its two divisions and present it in one package. Remember, it was only a few days ago when the automaker’s own director of research and development, Maurizio Reggiani, fessed up and admitted that Lamborghini is already developing its latest one-off (translation: limited edition in Lambo speak) to follow in the burnt tires left behind by the Centenario supercar.

What this closer relationship tells me is that the pieces are falling into place for something potentially special to come out of Lamborghini. I don’t know what it’s going to be at the moment. It could be a new supercar, a hypercar, a one-off something, or a combination of all three. There’s no telling what Lamborghini is capable of, but when you add the element of a race car division into the mix, the definition of “what’s possible” suddenly becomes something that we can all get excited about.

That’s where I’m at now. I’m intrigued, excited, and properly curious about what Lamborghini is cooking up, now that the puzzle pieces are starting to make some sense.
