The Chicago Auto Show is just days away from kicking off, and outside of a small handful of models that have been confirmed, what will actually debut at the show has remained mostly a mystery thus far. More recently, we found out that Ford would be debuting a new Expedition that is based on the F150, while Mercedes is said to be bringing a Metris Concept. But, what’s more interesting is that Chevy is planning to bring a total of nine special edition models to Chicago this year. Word comes from Automotive News, which claims the word came from Chevy spokesman Monte Doran. All nine special edition models will carry the Redline name, but as to what models will get that treatment, all we know is the list includes “cars, trucks, and utilities.”

Last year’s SEMA show brought about the Malibu and Camaro Redline concepts, but they weren’t the first to get the name. Years ago, the now dead Saturn brand gave the Redline series name to the Saturn Vue and even the Saturn Sky. So what production models will get the Redline treatment this year? Apparently, nobody outside of Chevy knows for sure, but you can bet the Spark, Cruze, and Impala will get the treatment, as will the new Traverse and maybe even the Suburban. I would put money on the Colorado and Silverado getting the Redline treatment as well, but what will the other two models be? The Malibu and Camaro Redlines from SEMA were just concepts, so they could make up the remaining slots. Then again, Chevy could give the Corvette a Redline badge and maybe even the Spark or Sonic.

For those of you who don’t know about the Redline Series, they are purely cosmetic and usually come in the form of a dark primary finish with red accents. Some may be a lighter color outside with red accents while the interior is black and red. Either way, none of the special editions will get any powertrain upgrades, or anything else special aside from some unique accenting. But, as long as the price is right, then a cosmetically enhanced special edition isn’t all that bad.

Why it Matters

I have to be honest; I’m not someone who really appreciates low-level special editions that are nothing more than a little extra paint and some colored stitching. But, truth be told, models like that really seem to sell. Chevy’s Tahoe Midnight Z71 package is currently doing very well, and there’s really not much to it. For now, that’s all we know, but as soon as we hear more, we’ll be sure to update you. Until then, here are a couple of galleries of Redline Concepts from the 2015 SEMA show.
