The Chrysler->ke21 brand has just announced it has received more than 10,000 orders for its brand-new, 2015 200 in the first day the ordering system for the sedan->ke142 went online. The second day brought another 7,000+ requests from customers and dealers and, according to the company, orders keep pouring in.

Production of the redesigned vehicle had already commenced in mid-March at the company's plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, and full assembly capacity -- much-needed given the 200's pre-delivery success -- is expected to be reached through mid-July.

This is great news for Chrysler, who has been struggling to survive with a lineup comprising only four models the past few years. That hasn't changed and the offer will shrink even further once the old 200 Convertible gets the axe later this year, but the redesigned 200->ke3341 might just be the pill that precedes the curing process Chrysler had to begin years ago.

Why It Matters

The 2015 Chrysler 200 is more than just a redesigned car. By ditching the traditional three-box body and gaining a fast-looking profile, the sedan showcases a brand-new design language that will embrace the entire Chrysler lineup by the end of the decade. The company was in dire need of an enthusiastic response to its new, trendsetting product, especially since the 200 will play a key role in the brand's newly-released five-year plan.

2015 Chrysler 200

Introduced at the 2014 Detroit Auto Show->ke222, the 2015 Chrysler 200 unveiled the brand's new design direction, also to be reflected in the next-generation Town & Country->ke1171 minivan->ke1149 and 300 sedan->ke937. Available in four trim levels, the new 200 is sold with a choice of two engines. An updated 2.4-liter Tigershark rated at 184 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque and an optional 3.6-liter, Pentastar V-6 with 295 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque on tap.

Both units are connected to a nine-speed automatic transmission and can be equipped with an all-wheel-drive system that features a segment-first fully disconnecting rear axle. The sedan is priced from $21,700 and fetches at least $25,795 when the range-topping trim is selected.
