Codemaster’s official F1 2016 video game has been unshackled from its console exclusivity as it is now available in mobile version. Developer Codemasters promised it and to it’s credit, it has delivered on that promise. Yes, for the first time in the history of the official Formula One game, it’s appearing in a mobile platform, first on Apple’s slew of mobile gadgets and then on Android devices “in the coming weeks.”

If you own an iPhone, iPad, or Apple TV, you can hop on over to the Apple App Store where you’ll see the F1 2016 game in all its glory. It’s going to cost you $9.99 to make the purchase, plus a few more in in-app purchases, but for the convenience of having the game literally in your pocket, I’d say that it’s a good purchase. Besides, it beats out the cost of buying the game in either the PlayStation 4 or xBox one where the prices for the game come up to at least $50.

Those who do end up making the mobile purchase stand to get the full slate of the Formula One experience, including all 22 drivers from all 11 teams on the grid. Likewise, all 21 circuits from the 2016 F1 calendar are also present. Game modes feature either a short race or a typical season-long affair, complete with all the practice and qualifying sessions. Most importantly, the quick turnaround between updates should allow for rapid expansion of gameplay and features.

The game can be played on Apple devices as old as the iPhone 5 S, but don’t expect to receive the full breadth of futures compared to playing it on the new iPhone 7 or 7 Plus. The latter comes with the extra benefit of using Apple’s new Taptic engine and stereo audio. Other than that, the game is what you should expect it to be. It’s the most comprehensive Formula One game anywhere, and if you’re still smarting over that chaotic Brazilian Grand Prix, you can play F1 2016 on your mobile devices while you wait for the climactic championship decider in Abu Dhabi on November 27.

Should be worth the money you pay for it

It’s been a while since I last played Codemasters’ F1 game and a big part of that is because the free time I allocate to playing video games is normally reserved for either Gran Turismo, Forza, or whatever new car racing game has arrived. There’s simply not enough time to play anything else. But Codemasters’ decision to bring F1 2016 to the mobile gaming platform is a big deal because the portability of being able to play it anywhere is very appealing.

Granted, the in-app purchases are going to be annoying, but at $9.99, it’s not at all expensive to buy. Plus, the game itself has a specific timetable and isn’t bound by any open-world features that make games like Gran Turismo and Forza so difficult and time-consuming to play. You play a season - maybe there’s a career feature - in F1 2016 and that’s that. There’s also the possibility of you being able to play against other players so that’s another intriguing proposition.

Ultimately, I have to go back to the accessibility of playing F1 2016. Wherever you are, whatever you’re doing, you can simply pull out your mobile device and you can play the game. That’s it. No need to carry or bring anything else. That by itself is reason enough to make that purchase.
