Italdesign Automobili Speciali’s first foray into the niche supercar segment has turned out to be a big hit after the newly-minted automaker announced that all examples of the Zerouno supercar are all accounted for. That’s five units, each priced comfortably north of seven figures. All of them. Sold out.

Keep in mind that while the Zerouno does have the beating heart of the Lamborghini Huracán – a 5.2-liter V-10 engine that pumps out 610 horsepower – the car itself has an entirely original body, a design product from the genius designers over at Italdesign. So it’s not a car that’s masquerading as a different model by simply having a different badge on it. The Zerouno is an original work, the first to come out of Italdesign’s Automobili Speciali division that was created earlier this year for the specific purpose of developing its own performance models under the Volkswagen Group umbrella. To this point, the company has actually built just two of the five models of the Zerouno. The first model was introduced at the 2017 Geneva Motor Show to coincide with the brand’s launch. The second is expected to make its debut at Pebble Beach in a little under two weeks. The remaining three models will be built at a later date, each to its customer’s exact specifications.

Can we expect bigger and better things from Italdesign Automobili Speciale?

It certainly looks that way. Granted, the company still falls under what I consider as a niche brand and we all know how dangerous it is to put a lot of faith on these types of companies. But Italdesign Automobili Speciale has a few things going for it that makes me confident that the company is going to be able to live up to its promises.

The first and most important is the fact that, despite being a boutique brand, Italdesign is owned by the Volkswagen Group. That’s about as sure a sign as any that the company will have all the funding it needs to build and develop its own models. Being part of the VW umbrella also means that it can continue sharing platforms and technologies with its sister brands. We already saw it in the Zerouno’s 5.2-liter V-10 engine, which is not only being used by the Lamborghini Huracán, but by the Audi R8 V10 as well.

Then there’s the company’s name and history. As small as it may seem to be relative to other supercar brands, Italdesign Giugiaro has a long and storied history in the automotive scene. It started off as an auto design studio back in 1968 under the leadership of Giorgetto Giugiaro and in the course of a little more than 40 years, it’s been involved designing some of the most iconic cars in history, ranging from everyday cars like the 2007 Suzuki SX4 to concepts like the Giugiaro Parcour and exotic supercars like the iconic Maserati MC12. The company came into the Volkswagen fold in 2010 after Lamborghini purchased over 90 percent of the company from its founder with Audi getting the remaining shares.

Clearly, Italdesign Automobili Speciali has the backing to remain relevant in the industry. For its part, the company is already moving forward on possible future models to follow the Zerouno. CEO Jörg Astalosch has even hinted that a roadster version of the Zerouno could be in the pipeline soon, although no final word has been given in that regard.

If any of you waited a little too long and missed out on owning any one of the five Zerounos Italdesign is offering, there’s still a chance to make up for it. Just don’t procrastinate this time because if the company does green light a roadster version of the supercar, expect it to come in equally limited quantities.
