DS has announced a new flagship model that will take on models like the BMW 5 Series. It won’t be a sedan though. Instead, it will be more like a “design-led fastback.” In other words, it will be more of a sporty wagon, and it got us to thinking that it could be the old Citroen Numero 9 Concept in production guise. Finally, after all of these years.

DS Vice President of Product, Eric Apode, told Auto Express “The design is finished, and I can tell you the car looks amazing. Since the beginning, it was extremely important to have this car in our range. But we will never do a copy; DS is something different, something spectacular. With our flagship, we will do that.”

Word has it that new flagship could bare the DS 8 moniker and will be based on the Peugeot 508. It will even use the same EMP 2 architecture. On that note, it could be powered by a 2.0-liter BlueHDi or a 1.6-liter gasoline mill. A plug-in hybrid will also be offered, featuring the E-Tense hybrid system that is found in the DS 7 Crossback. It’s said to feature front-wheel drive with no hope of RWD or AWD and will be able to achieve 40 miles of EV range.

For now, that’s about all we know, but it will certainly be interesting to see how DS takes on BMW and the 5 Series range. Stick around for details.
