Elon Musk’s Boring Company is now on the cusp of selling its latest merchandise to help fund its infrastructure projects. With its hats and flamethrowers already in the mix, the Boring Company is now turning its sights on selling LEGO-like blocks made out of the rocks that were dug out of the company’s tunnels. The goal of these blocks is to build affordable housing and other structures.

If you thought that Musk has finally gone off the deep by selling these LEGO-like bricks, you’d be wrong. On the contrary, Musk has largely kept his word on not using public funds to build its major infrastructure projects. Instead, his companies have relied on the power of creative merchandising to get the money they need to get their projects off the ground. It was the hats that got this money train rolling. From there, those flamethrowers turned into money printers, even if they also invited their share of controversy.

Now they have this new project that has the potential to a be a sustainable product with wide-ranging, real-life use. In typical fashion, Musk made the announcement on his Twitter account, saying that the LEGO-like interlocking bricks are made from tunneling rock that can be used in a variety of ways, including creating sculptures and, potentially, outer walls for affordable housing. According to Musk, the bricks are “rated for California seismic loads.” They’re also “super strong, but bored in the middle, like an aircraft wing spar, so not heavy.”

For now, the bricks will be largely sold as sculpture kits. The first one to be offered to the public will be kits that can recreate ancient Egyptian structures, including the pyramids, Sphinx, and the temple of Horus. Eventually, Musk envisions these bricks to serve as cheaper alternatives in building affordable housing projects in the future.

There’s no timetable for when these so-called “Boring Bricks” will become available. Musk only admitted that they’ll be available “soon.” For what it’s worth, though, materials aren’t going to be the issue as far as production goes. The Boring Company already has plenty of material to build those bricks since it has reportedly completed a 305-feet tunnel in Los Angeles. That’s a lot of tunneled rock that can be turned into bricks.
