After a rough couple of years, Faraday Future appears to have finally completed its first pre-production FF91. Thanks to the recent cash inflow, Faraday has made some progress with the electric vehicle. The car has been assembled at the company’s factory in Hanford, California. Faraday plans to start delivering production models of the FF91 in the first half of 2019. The company celebrated the milestone by sharing a picture of the build, where we also get a slight sneak-peak of the factory.

Where Was Faraday Future All This While?

Faraday Future is finally back on its feet, thanks to the $1.5 billion investment by a Chinese investor in February this year. With a loaded pocket, Faraday immediately went on to meet suppliers, and teased us with the news of a new SUV, dubbed the FF81. However, the same investor bought a 45-percent stake in the company in June.

For the uninitiated, pre-production is a very important stage in a car’s development. This is where the final testing takes place, and the company irons out the wrinkles before starting full-fledged production. Registrations and certification processes also take place in this stage. Currently, the company has a staff of 1200 people, and another 1000 will be roped in once full-fledged production has commenced.

What They Said

The company announced that “Hanford has met internal milestones, getting one key step closer to the first complete production car.”

The Senior Vice President of Manufacturing, Dag Reckhorn, said “It is inspirational for us at FF to see all the parts come together for this significant day: the literal parts of the FF 91 from our various on-time supplier partners; the processes and tooling within the Hanford facility itself; and the invaluable training for the essential ‘soft’ skills required for this level of sophisticated teamwork I and others need in our Hanford production teams as we begin creation of our FF 91 for demanding users. The worker training program with College of the Sequoias through the California ETP grant is essential."

About the Car

We don’t know much about the car yet, but size-wise, it’s going to be a tad bigger than the Jaguar i-Pace. Faraday also calls the FF91 a new species; which is right because the car has a weird shape, and we can’t figure out what it is. An SUV? A Crossover? The FF91 will reportedly go from a standstill to 60 mph in 2.4 seconds! The price is speculated to be between $100,000 and $300,000. Yes, it’s a huge bracket, but that’s because the company is now calling it an “ultra-luxurious intelligent electric vehicle.”

Our Take

Is Faraday being too ambitious with the 91? Perhaps, they could’ve played it safe and launched something that could bring them volumes. Well, sometimes you need to take bigger risks for bigger rewards. Let’s see if the company can sustain itself against the likes of some established players in the market.
