Ferrari’s highly anticipated SUV now has a name. It's going to be called the Purosangue, and it's scheduled to arrive sometime in late 2022. That’s the word that came out of the automaker’s future product roadmap. It’s also the first concrete evidence that the Prancing Horse is venturing into the world of SUVs. Specific details are still sketchy at this point, but the Purosangue will sit on a new front-engined platform that can accommodate all-wheel drive and electrification.

The Ferrari SUV

This is it, ladies and gentlemen. The Ferrari SUV is now a reality, or at least it will be when it launches by the end of 2022. But it has a name, which is a very good start. For those who don’t know, “Purosangue” is Italian for “thoroughbred.” It’s as fitting a name for a Ferrari model as we’ve seen in recent history.

There are still a lot of things we don’t know about the Purosangue, but to its credit, Ferrari revealed a few important pieces of information that can help us start the puzzle. A front-mounted engine will be fitted just behind the front wheel while a high-voltage, electric range hybrid system will take its place at the back, close to the dual-clutch transmission. This setup, Ferrari says, will provide better weight distribution. Prospective buyers can also choose between a purely internal combustion engine or a hybrid. The SUV will be offered with a rear-wheel drive setup, but four-wheel drive will also be available as a “possible option for versatility.”

In terms of design, the Ferrari Purosangue has the distinction of becoming Ferrari’s first-ever model with a five-door body. That said, don’t expect it to look like a traditional SUV. Instead, the Purosangue will feature a coupe-inspired shape. An important note, too, is that it will be smaller in size compared to the Lamborghini Urus.

Look for the Italian automaker to start development of the model soon, if it hasn’t started already. Either way, this is happening. A Ferrari SUV is in the works. It’s something that we never thought would be possible, but here we are. Even Ferrari’s new CEO, Louis Carey Camilleri, was initially skeptical of Marchionne’s plans. But he’s come around to the other side after seeing design sketches of the model. More importantly, the Purosangue has the goods to become a sales powerhouse in some of the brand’s most important markets, including China.

There’s no turning back now. The Ferrari SUV is finally happening. We can all start calling it the Purosangue.
